Fellow gardeners have probably tried quite a few little gardening secrets, like watering flowers with white vinegar diluted in water, or watering with beer... But how could the journey of gardening exploration stop there? Today, Huahua is going to introduce another gardening trick, so keep reading!

Clivia Flower Stuck in the Sheath

If you had to name the flower gardeners love growing most, Clivia (Clivia miniata) would definitely be among them. But the thing gardeners fear most when caring for Clivia is the flower getting stuck in the sheath. Why not put a "black hat" on a Clivia whose flower is stuck!

1. Put on a Black Hat

Cover the Clivia whose flower is stuck with a black plastic bag, and poke a few small holes in the bag for ventilation and airflow.

The Clivia after one week.

2. Shut It in a Dark Room

Give the Clivia whose flower is stuck a dark treatment. If you have a dark, light-proof room at home, you can put the Clivia inside.

After about 20 days.

Forcing Bougainvillea to Bloom

C o m p l e t e G u i d e t o G a r d e n i n g

Bougainvillea has a very long blooming period, and with proper care it can bloom every month. And a black plastic bag is a handy little helper for forcing blooms~

1. Set the Blooming Date in Advance

Light-shading to force Bougainvillea to bloom should be done 20-30 days before the intended blooming date. If you want it to bloom in June, you need to start on May 1st.

2. Put on a Black Hat

Every day after 4 p.m., cover the Bougainvillea with a black bag, or shut it in a small dark room. Poke a few holes in the bag to ensure ventilation, and take the bag off at 9 a.m. the next morning.

Hippeastrum Flower Stuck in the Sheath

C o m p l e t e G u i d e t o G a r d e n i n g

Many people growing Hippeastrum (Hippeastrum spp.) find that in the early stage of growth, the flower scape often gets stuck in the sheath and stays too short to grow tall. At this point, it is time for the black plastic bag to step in!

1. Put on a Black Hat

Cover the entire Hippeastrum whose flower is stuck or whose flower scape is too short with a black bag, and poke a few small holes. Once the flower scape has grown out and become longer, take the bag off and place it in the sun for care.

2. Light-Shading Comparison

Collecting Hippeastrum Seeds

Besides helping Hippeastrum send up its flower scape, a plastic bag can also help you collect the seeds after the flowers fade~

1. Bagging

After the Hippeastrum flowers fade, the seed pods start to change color. When they are close to yellow, cover the seeds with a plastic bag, otherwise the seeds easily drop off or blow away in the wind.

2. Collecting Seeds

Once the seed pods have fully opened, take the bag off and collect the seeds.

Growing Roots on Rieger Begonia

C o m p l e t e G u i d e t o G a r d e n i n g

Many people like to propagate Rieger Begonia (Begonia × hiemalis) by cuttings in water, but Rieger Begonia has fairly weak roots and poor water-absorbing ability, and direct sunlight easily damages the roots. Without proper shading, the roots rot and the plant is a goner!

1. Put on a Flowery Coat

Prepare some scrap cloth and make a cloth bag roughly the same size as the water-propagation container, then slip it over the transparent container.

2. Care in the Sun

Rieger Begonia itself loves light, so once you have shaded the root area, you can take it out to bask in the sun.
