Rose Growing Series Article: No. 96
When it comes to growing flowers, watering is always an unavoidable topic. Gardeners often ask Lanyao: how often should potted roses be watered? How often should rose flowers be watered?
There really is no fixed answer to this question, but there is a relatively fixed answer. What is a relatively fixed answer?First, Lanyao will explain why there is no fixed answer. I believe many gardeners not only read Lanyao's flower-growing articles but also read articles by others, and many of them say things like watering a certain flower once every few days.
I wonder if you followed that advice? If you really did what they wrote and counted the days to water, then Lanyao dares to guarantee your flowers won't survive a month! Why does Lanyao dare to say that?
You need to know that growing flowers at home is very different from batch growing in a nursery. Nursery management is very simple because their growing environment is relatively fixed (they all try to create the environment most suitable for flower growth). But growing flowers at home is different. Not to mention the climate differences across our country from north to south, just the potting soil alone is different for everyone.
Some gardeners use peat soil, some use pure garden soil, and others use special-purpose soil. Every gardener's soil mix has different air permeability and water retention.
In addition, rose plants of different sizes have different water needs. Light, temperature, humidity, air circulation, and so on all affect how quickly the potting soil dries and rewets. Since so many factors affect the moisture level of the potting soil, how can watering be done uniformly by counting days?
For two potted roses of the same size, one with garden soil + coal cinders and one with pine bark + peat soil, placed in the same environment: if the pine bark + peat soil pot needs watering once every 2 days, then the garden soil + coal cinders pot can be watered once every 5 days or even longer. In the example above, Lanyao also mentioned the number of days for watering, and this is the relative watering days. What are relative watering days?
Relative watering days refer to a relatively fixed number of days determined by the wet-dry cycle of your potting soil. Except for particularly big weather changes, this number generally does not change. For example, if a pot of roses gets water once a day on sunny days, then without changing the growing environment, follow the frequency of watering once every 1 day.
But if it rains, or the season changes, then the relative number of watering days needs to be adjusted accordingly. Lanyao has said so much, but what you may care about most is: *so how often should roses be watered?*
So here comes the useful part:How often should potted plants be watered? There is no fixed answer; it depends on the specific situation of your potted plant. Generally, when the soil near the roots is dry 2cm below the surface, you can water.
Or observe the plant's leaves. If you find the leaves soft, drooping, and listless, or the young tips of the rose wilting and drooping, or the flower buds drooping, these are all signs of water shortage, and you can water. By observing the signs of water shortage in roses, you can work out a relatively fixed number of watering days. Here Lanyao reminds every gardener:
Many gardeners' potted roses have dried out too much, and when watered once, the water cannot soak in. The flower buds droop, then stand upright again after watering, but droop again half a day later. When this happens, the potting soil is mostly too dry, and you need to soak the pot to thoroughly moisten the soil. After that, just follow the principle of watering thoroughly when dry.
Lanyao has rambled on so much, hoping everyone can truly grasp the essence of watering roses, and stop watering your beloved potted roses to death!
