As soon as summer arrives, flower lovers who grow succulents at home all start to get nervous, and the whole person goes into a state of alert. Whether it is watering or light, they strictly follow the secret tips found from various posts, for fear that with one careless move the succulent will just die outright.

But there is no way around it. Who made succulents so prone to black rot as soon as summer comes? Sometimes before you have even found the problem, the succulents at home are dead and only the pots are left. After all, when everyone first got into succulents they were full of expectation, and seeing a scene of black rot everywhere is more than anyone can bear.

Causes of withering and death

In fact, the cause of succulent black rot in summer is very simple, and that is a problem with watering. First of all, in summer you absolutely must not cut off water, otherwise the succulent will not get enough water to maintain its own defense system, and in this way the succulent becomes even more susceptible to fungal infection.

Of course, some people say, I did not cut off water; on the contrary, I even watered the succulents from time to time, but in the end I still could not escape the outcome of black rot. Why exactly is this?

In fact, the main reason most people's succulents die in summer is that after watering, if the moisture in the soil cannot drain away in time, and on top of that the summer temperature is too high and the air humidity is relatively high, the roots cannot breathe smoothly, and the plant's immunity drops greatly. In this way, the succulent becomes even more prone to black rot.

Clever solutions

Since the cause of black rot is that the roots come into contact with too much moisture, then if the moisture is kept from touching the roots, the succulent will not be prone to black rot. Of course, if you simply water, the moisture will inevitably seep to the bottom of the pot, causing water to accumulate around the roots.

At this time, if you use a straw, punch a few holes in it, and pour water into it, then the water will seep into the surrounding soil, and of course the moisture flowing to the bottom of the pot will be reduced. This method can avoid black rot and root rot in succulents to the greatest extent.

How to do it

1. First, prepare a relatively thick straw, and use scissors or another tool to punch a few small holes in the lower-middle part of the straw. The number of small holes can be adjusted specifically according to the size of the succulent pot;

2. Then insert the straw into the soil. Note that when inserting it, the position of the straw should be kept away from the succulent's root area to avoid damaging the plant's fragile roots and stems;

3. Then use a curved-spout bottle to pour water into the straw. You can fill it directly in one go. Anyway, the amount of water the whole straw can hold is not much, and it will not cause the succulent to be overwatered. For a pot of about 10 cm, 5 straws' worth of water is enough;

4. After that, you will find that the soil in the succulent pot gradually becomes moist, but the soil will not become sticky and heavy. It is exactly the soil environment suitable for succulents to get through summer;

5. Of course, you still need to make some slight adjustments according to the size of the succulent pot. For example, for a larger pot you can insert a few more straws, and for a succulent that has already entered dormancy, one straw's worth of water is enough.
