How to prevent the variety from rooting after fruit tree grafting?

How to prevent the grafted variety of fruit trees from rooting? In recent years, when visiting orchards, I often come across dwarf trees that have grown tall, with a tree full of vigorous shoots that simply cannot be controlled, and I thought I had bought fake seedlings. Looking under the tree, I could not see the graft union. After digging away the soil, the graft union was in the soil, and the variety above the union had already rooted. Once the variety grows a single root, the tree's vigor will bounce back, and when the variety roots, as long as conditions are suitable, the roots it grows are often very thick (Figure 1) [Jishan Huayao], so special attention must be paid.

After the variety on a dwarf rootstock roots, the dwarfing effect is lost, the stress resistance of the variety becomes worse, and the quality of the fruit produced deteriorates.

1 Measures to prevent the variety from rooting

1.1 Consistent planting depth

Before planting, dig trenches and backfill them, and be sure to irrigate heavily to settle the soil, then build ridges and level the bed surface. When planting, drive stakes at both ends of the tree row and run a line at about 5 cm above the ground as a marker. When planting, keep the graft union level with the line, and water after planting.

1.2 Ensure the graft union is exposed above ground during the growing season

After watering the young trees with winter protection water, the tree basin should be mounded to protect the root crown, and after spring begins, the soil must be dug away to expose the graft union. This measure is very critical. At planting time, the graft union can often be kept above ground, but after mounding soil, this measure is often neglected. If the soil is not dug away or not dug away sufficiently, as long as the variety is buried in the soil, the variety will certainly root before long.

2 Handling after the variety has rooted

Every spring, after digging away the soil, check promptly. If you find that the graft union is not exposed above ground, be sure to dig away the soil promptly and cut off all roots above the graft union, and disinfect the cuts with 50 times carbendazim + 50 times tebuconazole.
