Growing flowers makes our home environment higher in quality and our lives more beautiful. Keeping a few potted plants at home not only purifies the air but also brings visual beauty. But why do the leaves of the gardenias, camellias, pothos and lucky bamboo we grow at home turn yellow, and what should we do?

Insufficient light

During the growth of every potted green plant, sunlight is essential. Without photosynthesis, and kept in a dark place for a long time, the leaves easily turn yellow and drop.

Too much watering

If the plants are grown indoors in the living room, the potting soil itself dries more slowly than that of plants grown on an open terrace, and evaporation is not great. If you water frequently and water before the potting soil has dried through, waterlogging easily occurs, so the roots cannot absorb too much water, and the leaves turn yellow or the roots even rot.

Poor, compacted potting soil

If the soil has not been changed or the pot repotted for several years, the soil has no nutrients and is compacted, so water cannot penetrate; waterlogging will also cause yellow leaves. Some potted plants bought ready-made, such as pothos, have only coconut coir in the pot, which holds water too well but has no nutrients, which is also no good; they need to be repotted in soil.

Poor ventilation

Plants, like people, like fresh air. If they are kept for a long time in a place with no airflow, they grow poorly, so you need to open the windows often for ventilation. When the leaves of the plants turn yellow, promptly place them by the balcony or windowsill, in a place with indirect light and airflow, and they will slowly recover.

Yellow leaves caused by iron deficiency

When growing lucky bamboo in water, pour in a little rusty water, or put in a rusty iron nail, and the leaves will be glossy green and never turn yellow again.

Pothos, gardenia and camellia like acidic soil and an acidic environment. Besides the points above that need attention, they also need iron supplementation.

So you can water them with, or spray on, a little 0.2% ferrous sulfate, and the branches and leaves will grow greener and greener, with new leaves and tender leaves sprouting nonstop.
