The peony is one of the earliest cultivated flowers in China, the guardian flower of Gemini, and is also known as the "Flower God of May". Because it has been regarded as the flower of love since ancient times, it has now been honored as the representative flower of the Qixi Festival. There are still more than 2 [units of time] until Qixi. Planting a pot of peonies and giving it to your beloved is truly the best Qixi gift. Let's take a look at what to pay attention to when growing peonies.

1. Selection. Getting a pot of peonies is fairly easy now. You can get one as a gift from a friend, buy one online, buy one at a flower and bird market, or grow one from seed yourself. When choosing cut flowering branches or potted flowers, it is best to choose ones with firm buds that have just begun to show color. Double-flowered varieties show a bit more color than single-flowered ones.

2. Potting soil. Peonies have fleshy roots, so when growing peonies in pots at home, you must choose a loose, fertile, slightly acidic sandy soil. If the soil is too alkaline, it can easily cause yellow leaves and even withering and death. For the pot, choose one about 20-25 cm in diameter, and a clay pot is best.

3. Fertilizing. During the peony's growing season, apply a dilute fertilizer once every half month. Choose an acidic organic nutrient solution, fermented from sugarcane molasses. It looks dark like soy sauce and has a faint sweet smell, and is rich in humic acid. Take 1 ml of the stock solution and mix it with 500 ml of water to fertilize the peony at the roots. This can effectively promote flowering and improve the acidity of the soil. Once it starts blooming, do not fertilize anymore, and when fertilizing, do not splash fertilizer onto the buds, or they will drop.

4. Pruning. After the peony enters summer, provide shade in time during the strong midday sun to avoid sunburning the plant. When watering, it is best to use a fine spray bottle to prevent a strong stream of water from washing over it. Just keep the potting soil moist; there is no need to water too much, to avoid waterlogging.

To make peonies bloom abundantly and with vivid colors, be sure to remember to prune. During the peony's flowering period, once side buds appear, promptly remove the excess buds. This concentrates nutrients and promotes larger, more beautiful main buds. After flowering, if you do not want to collect seeds, immediately cut off the flower stems to preserve nutrients.
