Rose cultivation series article: No. 94

In yesterday's article, Lan Yao discussed the problem of stunted roses, focusing on the effect of potting soil on rose growth.

And now another flower lover has asked Lan Yao:The rose has been grown for more than half a year, so why has it just not grown any basal shoots? Anyone who has grown roses knows how important rose basal shoots are. Rose basal shoots are an important condition for rejuvenating roses and renewing the plant. When it comes to the issue of roses growing basal shoots, first we need to understand what rose basal shoots are, and what conditions roses need to grow them. What are rose basal shoots?

We often talk about rose basal shoots, and some beginner flower lovers still do not understand what basal shoots refer to.

Generally speaking, rose basal shoots are strong branches that sprout from near the base of the rose. They grow very fast and are sturdy, and if left alone they can quickly outgrow the original old branches.

After the original basal shoots of a climbing rose are trained horizontally, very strong branches may sprout from positions near the lower part, and their growth is similar to that of basal shoots sprouting near the base, so they can simply be treated as rose basal shoots as well. (This situation is relatively rare in shrubs.)What conditions do roses need to grow basal shoots?

Rose basal shoots are very important for rejuvenating roses, but roses also need certain conditions to grow them. They do not just casually push out a basal shoot. According to the normal growth pattern of roses, the buds at the top of the branches sprout first, and generally the lower and middle buds will not easily sprout.

So for a rose to sprout new buds from the base (near the roots), first of all a sufficient supply of fertilizer and water is needed. This is easy to understand: only by eating enough can one grow strong. If fertilizer and water are usually insufficient, and there is not even much to spare for maintaining basic life activities, how could there be extra nutrients to develop growth potential?

Therefore, in addition to frequent topdressing during cultivation, sufficient base fertilizer should be added when potting, so as to provide roses with nutrients over the long term. For roses to grow basal shoots, sufficient fertilizer and water is the primary condition. If fertilizer and water are insufficient and basal shoots are forced artificially, the branches that grow will not be especially strong.

Tips for artificially forcing basal shoots in roses:When fertilizer and water are not sufficient enough for basal shoots to sprout naturally, if artificial forcing is needed, we can use the method of training the branches horizontally to change the nutrient transport relationships of the rose, thereby achieving the goal of forcing basal shoots.

The method is very simple. If it is a small seedling, just hang a heavy object on the old branch so that the branch changes from an upright state to a drooping state, then strengthen fertilizer and water. Generally, basal shoots will sprout in 15 days to 30 days.

Of course, what Lan Yao is describing here is a relatively simple situation. If your potted rose seedling had problems starting from potting and soil mixing, and then flowering consumed too much energy, then if you want to force basal shoots to grow, it will take much more effort. Tomorrow Lan Yao will continue sharing about the problem of excessive consumption in roses.
