How to care for orchids in June? Beware of stalled buds and root rot
Orchids, cherished by flower lovers for their simple, quiet, elegant and noble character, have a cultivation history of more than a thousand years in China. Growing orchids requires careful attention, and different periods call for different care methods, so what should you pay attention to in June?
1. The weather in June is like a bride leaving home: one moment bright sun, the next torrential rain, unpredictable, so various orchid diseases and rot at the leaf core easily break out. In southern China this is the plum rain season; a little light rain is fine, but it is best not to let orchids get caught in heavy downpours, to avoid waterlogging, root rot and bud rot.
2. After heavy rain there is often blazing sunshine again. If an orchid has just been moistened by rain and is then immediately exposed to the scorching sun, the leaves are easily scorched. So in June you must do a good job of rain protection and sun protection, reduce the time spent growing them outdoors, and it is best to place them on a shelf indoors, in a ventilated, cool spot.
3. June is the period when orchids sprout and unfurl leaves. These buds that finally emerged in May are very prone to stalling or having their growing points shrink if the potting soil is too dry or the air humidity is too low. Orchid growers can use a plant monitor to track soil moisture, nutrients, light and air humidity in real time 24 hours a day; just insert it into the plant's potting soil and connect it to the app, a foolproof operation that easily solves the problem of when to water orchids.
4. On the basis of good watering, fertilizing is very important for promoting better growth of orchids. It is better to choose organic fertilizer specially made for orchids, because organic fertilizer is more easily absorbed by plants; apply it once every 10 days. If you use liquid fertilizer, during the orchid's growing season you can also apply foliar fertilizer as a top dressing to the leaves, simply following the instructions.
5. The key points for orchid care in June are: water and fertilizer must be appropriate; while keeping the orchid's potting soil relatively moist, ensure the orchids sprout, emerge and unfurl their leaves, growing strong and healthy.
