Growing a clivia easily leads to rot and root rot. This is why most people find it hard to know how to water a clivia. How do you tell whether the potting soil of a clivia is dry or wet? Xiao Qi will explain briefly.

1. We can go by the weight of the whole pot, the approximate weight before watering and the approximate weight after watering. If the pot feels much lighter, we can water it. The most important thing is to wait until the soil surface is dry before weighing it again; if it is very light by then, just water it thoroughly right away.

2. Another method is to lightly tap the outer wall of the pot with something like a wooden stick, tapping from top to bottom. If the sound of tapping the pot is very crisp, that proves there is no water left inside. If it is a dull dong dong dong sound, that proves there is still enough water inside. If half of the potting soil is already short of water, we can water it thoroughly right away.

3. This method is the simplest one. We can find a long bamboo skewer. Insert it along the outer wall of the pot to 2/3 of the pot's depth. Every time we want to water but do not know whether the potting soil is dry or wet, we can just pull out the bamboo skewer and see whether it still has moisture. If it still has moisture, we do not need to water. If only the bottom of the bamboo skewer has a little moisture and everywhere else is dry, we can water it thoroughly right away.

When watering a clivia, be sure to remember to water it thoroughly in one go, and never give it half water. This is because the roots of a clivia all grow downward, and there are many roots at the bottom of the pot. If you only water halfway, the roots at the bottom cannot get water and will dry out, gradually drying upward; once too much has dried out, it will affect its growth.
