The Chinese cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum kotoense) has deep green, glossy leaves with clear veins, and the whole plant is fragrant. Just from its name you can tell it carries excellent symbolism. So how do you grow a Chinese cinnamon tree well? Let's take a look!

How to cultivate a Chinese cinnamon tree:

(1). Soil: choose a loose, fertile, well-draining, micro-acidic sandy soil rich in organic matter.

(2). Fertilizing: the Chinese cinnamon tree is a fertilizer-loving plant. During the growing season, apply 1 round of compound fertilizer each month. In autumn, apply a top dressing of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, which can increase cold resistance and ensure safe overwintering. In winter, stop fertilizing.

If you find the leaves turning yellow and dropping, it is caused by over-concentrated fertilizer, and the roots may be burned. You need to water promptly to dilute the fertilizer, or simply take the plant out of the pot, trim the roots, and then change the soil.

(3). Water: spring and autumn are the peak growing seasons for the Chinese cinnamon tree. Keep the potting soil moist, and also spray water frequently on the leaves and surroundings to maintain a certain air humidity. In winter, reduce watering. When watering, add an appropriate amount of ferrous sulfate solution to the water; this improves the soil and helps the Chinese cinnamon tree grow luxuriantly.

(4). Light: the Chinese cinnamon tree needs sufficient light to ensure fast growth, but it fears scorching sun. In summer, be sure to shade it in time, or move it indoors to a spot with bright light. Generally, a Chinese cinnamon tree grown for 3~5 years should receive appropriate light and avoid scorching sun. A Chinese cinnamon tree of 6~10 years needs more light, and likewise should avoid scorching sun.

(5). Pruning: you need to cut off overly long branches and remove diseased and weak branches, which can increase the plant's airiness and help with ventilation. Pruning is generally done in April when the weather is clear.
