Hippeastrum (amaryllis) is a very brightly colored flower. Because of its beautiful appearance, it is widely grown everywhere as an ornamental flower. Most of its flower colors are red, including deep red, light red, pink and so on, which is why it is called zhudinghong (amaryllis). So what should you pay attention to when caring for Hippeastrum at home? Let's take a look.

1. The leaves are vigorous, but there are very few flowers

There are several possible reasons for this situation: if it is because the growth is too dense, the plant needs to be pruned at the appropriate time; if it is because there is not enough sunlight, it should be placed in a sunny spot; if it is because the temperature is unsuitable, the indoor temperature must be ensured; if it is because the soil used is wrong, the soil must be replaced.

1. Prune in time

Reason:When Hippeastrum is too lush, the whole plant's demand for nutrients is much greater than before. If nutrients are still supplied in the previous way, the nutrients will not be enough, and it will be difficult for the flowers to open.

Solution:At this time, pruning is needed to ensure that the plant has enough nutrients to bloom.

2. Increase light

Reason:Hippeastrum is a sun-loving plant. Insufficient sunlight cannot meet its growth needs, so the plant will not bloom either.

Solution:Only by increasing the plant's light exposure time can it grow normally. Especially in autumn and winter, when the daytime becomes shorter, even more attention must be paid to ensuring the plant's sunlight hours.

3. Ensure temperature

Reason:Too low a temperature will affect the plant's growth and cause the plant to be unable to bloom.

Solution:When winter is approaching, keep the plant warm in time, or move the plant to a warm place as early as possible to ensure that the plant will not be frostbitten.

4. Replace the soil in time

Reason:Old soil contains insufficient nutrients and cannot meet the growth needs of Hippeastrum, which will cause it to be unable to bloom normally.

Solution:Replace the old soil in time; replacing the soil about once a year is enough.

2. It blooms, but the leaves turn yellow and the overall plant is not vigorous

When you find that the leaves of Hippeastrum begin to turn yellow, you must first determine what is causing it, whether it is normal metabolism or a problem with the variety, or a mistake in management, or damage by a virus, or biting by pests, and so on. After determining the root cause of the yellowing leaves, then investigate further the reasons causing this condition and what remedies there are.

Hippeastrum prefers a relatively humid environment, so it has rather strict requirements for soil moisture. If you accidentally water too much, it will cause the leaves to turn yellow. So if you want to remedy it, you must control the usual watering amount. When growing indoors, do not water too frequently. The potting soil is best kept slightly dry, but do not greatly reduce water supply just because you are afraid of yellowing leaves. Insufficient water will also affect the growth of the flowers. In addition, besides controlling the amount of water, the drainage of the potting soil is also very important.

Hippeastrum, which does not like water but likes light, can grow quickly in the sun, but the stronger the sunlight, the faster it grows is not necessarily true. Hippeastrum under the scorching sun will also show signs of yellow leaves. Therefore, at noon, move the potted plant to a shady place, or do appropriate sun protection; if you find that some leaves have already been sunburned, that means this place is not suitable for staying long, and the potted plant should be moved away as soon as possible. At this stage, do not apply fertilizer to it; just supplement some water.

The most effective way to deal with sunburn and excessive fertilization is to provide water. Watering can dilute the fertilizer in the potting soil. The diluted fertilizer will penetrate into the potting soil, thereby improving the absorption rate of the flowers, but do not water too much and cause waterlogging. The damage from sunburn and heavy fertilization mainly occurs in high-temperature environments.

Pay attention to these points, and I believe you will definitely be able to grow palm-sized flowers from your own Hippeastrum!
