Rosa multiflora is a deciduous shrub that can climb fences with its vine-like flowers. It is especially cold-hardy, its flowers can be used medicinally and made into fragrance, it blooms profusely, and although the flowers are smaller than those of Chinese roses, the scent is fresh. It grows fast and roots extremely easily from cuttings, with a very high survival rate. On a balcony or in a small yard, plant a few Rosa multiflora and they will bloom in a riot of color, patch after patch, especially vivid and eye-catching, simply gorgeous. How do you get Rosa multiflora cuttings to survive?

Propagation methods for Rosa multiflora

There are several

Cutting selection

Choose semi-lignified cuttings about ten cm long with no pests or diseases; any cutting that is not especially tender or already aged will do.

Cutting time

Apart from the cold winter and the hot summer, you can take cuttings at any other time. The best times for cuttings are April and May in spring, and September and October in autumn; at other times, as long as the temperature is suitable, you can still take cuttings.

Cutting medium

Ordinary sandy soil, river sand, or vermiculite can all be used for cuttings; if you do not have those, ordinary garden soil will do. Sprinkling a little carbendazim on the medium to disinfect it is also a good idea.

Cutting method

First use a chopstick or small wooden stick to poke a hole in the ring, put the cutting in, water the soil medium thoroughly. When the temperature is not high, you can cover it with a plastic bag, keep it out of sunlight, and spray water inside every day, or use a mineral water bottle for the cutting, so its rooting progress is clear at a glance.

It usually roots in a little over a month, and once it sprouts you can pot it up and water and sun it normally.

During the peak growing season, fertilize more, water promptly, and prune the branches often; in one or two years it can climb up a wall or balcony railing.

The blooms are especially magnificent, clusters of flowers opening all at once!
