How to control weeds in the yard? Six tips to keep flowers blooming all year round
Weeds often grow next to vegetables and flowers in the yard, which is very annoying. If there are some tips that can help you control weed growth, or even better, remove weeds, then you will surely enjoy your gardening time even more and make your flower-growing life easier.
Weeds hinder the growth of plants and flowers, affect the growth and flowering of other plants, and weeds compete with plants and flowers for nutrients.
1. Remove weed seeds
Even if we dig out the roots of weeds, there will still be some dormant weed seeds in the soil. Every square meter of soil in the yard contains many weed seeds, and weed seeds are generally buried under the soil.
When we dig the soil to plant plants, these weed seeds are brought to the soil surface, and then they will take root and sprout. After digging the soil, appropriately covering the soil surface with some mulch can prevent weeds from sprouting.
For example, for the most common weed, dandelion, you can directly use some sharp blades to cut off the dandelion root directly, which can prevent the weed from photosynthesis. Simply digging it out is useless, and the weed seeds will remain dormant for a long time.
2. Pile up mulch
By keeping the soil cool and moist, you can also prevent weeds from growing excessively. Putting some mulch on the soil surface is beneficial to plants, and it can also inhibit weed growth. It can also attract some insects such as crickets and beetles, and they can eat various weed seeds.
In places with sufficient light, sunlight will pass through the mulch and promote weed rooting and sprouting. Only by completely covering the weeds with mulch can you prevent weeds from growing out. Generally, about 5 cm of mulch is needed. You can even use light-blocking boards or black plastic film, and let biodegradable mulch cover the soil surface, thereby inhibiting weed growth.
Once there is relatively sufficient organic matter on the mulch, weed seeds carried by the wind or bird droppings will also carry seeds, and the weed seeds will gradually grow.
3. Weed removal techniques
Weeding is generally done under dry environmental conditions, which can promote weeds to quickly shrivel and die. Use some sharp hoes to remove all the weeds covering the plants, or use a sharp knife to cut the weeds off from the roots, and they can even be used as mulch.
Experienced old gardeners choose to remove weeds in the morning when there is sunlight, so that the weeds quickly wither in the sun. If there are seed-bearing weeds in the soil, they cannot be used for composting, otherwise these weed seeds will lie dormant, and once the environment is suitable, they will take root and sprout.
Weeds that are cut or removed can be put in sealed bags for composting. You can directly put them in some black plastic bags, add some clean water to keep them moist, and place them in a sunny place to bake for a few days. When the temperature is particularly high, the weed seeds can be eliminated.
Do not directly mix weeds into compost soil, otherwise the decomposition and fermentation temperature will not be high enough, and these weed seeds will not be killed by heat.
4. Prevent weeds from spreading
To prevent weeds from continuously spreading, you can directly cut off the base of the weed stems and roots, which can bring relatively great benefits in a short time. When you cannot completely remove the weeds, the best way is to cut off their roots.
Although this cannot completely remove the weeds, it can prevent them from flowering and setting seed. It is best to prune before they bloom. Removing weeds before they bloom can prevent them from spreading.
5. Pay attention to the spacing between plants
It is very unsuitable for plants to grow too densely. When planting flowers in the yard, be sure to maintain appropriate plant spacing so that the plants have enough space to grow. Of course, the spacing between flowers should not be too far. If the branches and leaves of the plants form an appropriate shading effect, it can also inhibit newly emerging weeds from growing.
Planting plants too densely makes them prone to fungal diseases. For example, a common fungal disease is caused by poor ventilation between branches and leaves. If the ventilation and light transmission at the base of the branches are poor, they are prone to leaf spot disease.
There are many ways to control weeds. You can even buy some drip irrigation round tubes, which can avoid directly supplying water to weeds. You can control the hose to drip water directly to the roots and stems of plants, avoiding watering the soil in other places and preventing weed seeds from germinating.
