Rieger begonia (Begonia × hiemalis) is a flowering pot plant that many people love. Its blooms are rich and elegant, beautiful and lovely, and it decorates a home wonderfully well. Liking it does not mean you can grow it well, so just follow along and learn!

Miss Wang grows Rieger begonia this way, and it blooms twice a month. It is just so beautiful!

A newly bought Rieger begonia usually comes in a plastic pot, so it is best to change the soil and the pot. A clay pot can be used; though it is not as attractive as a ceramic pot, it breathes better and suits the growth of Rieger begonia better.

For the soil, choose a loose, fertile sandy soil with good drainage, so that even if you water too much, the roots of the Rieger begonia will not easily rot.

Rieger begonia is not particularly drought tolerant. In summer, water once every one to two days. If you use tap water, let it sit for one to two days before use. You can also collect some rainwater to water the flowers, which can make the blooms more vivid and larger.

Normally it should be placed in a bright spot with indirect light and must not be exposed to direct sunlight. It also grows well in a semi-shaded environment; just make sure it gets more than six hours of light a day.

To make Rieger begonia bloom, when the plant grows to 15 to 20 cm, pinch out the growing tip to encourage side buds to grow and promote more blooming.

During the growing period of Rieger begonia, apply a liquid fertilizer every 15 days, mainly nitrogen fertilizer; when it is budding and blooming, use mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, applying it at least once, which can make the flowers more vivid.

If you want it to bloom continuously, after each flowering not only should you cut off the faded flowers, but you should also replenish nutrients in time. Only after it quickly recovers its growth will it have the spare energy to form buds and bloom.

Master the growth habits of Rieger begonia, and getting it to bloom twice a month is just too easy.
