The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is a very popular holiday plant, and once it blooms, the mass of bright red flowers is incredibly festive. However, if the Christmas cactus is not cared for properly, it can very easily fail to bloom or produce only a few flowers. If your Christmas cactus blooms poorly, we still need to look for the cause. Only once we find the cause can we treat the problem accordingly and achieve a complete cure.

1. Nitrogen fertilizer

During the plant's growth process, nitrogen fertilizer can promote vegetative growth and make the plant grow more vigorously, but if the amount of nitrogen fertilizer used is relatively high and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are relatively low, this will cause excess nutrition, which in turn inhibits reproductive growth, and this will affect the blooming of the Christmas cactus.

Generally, if this is the case, we should best stop applying nitrogen fertilizer. About one month before the flowering period, we need to use more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, such as the relatively common potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, so that it can provide relatively sufficient nutrition for the Christmas cactus to bloom and ensure that it can bloom normally.

2. Light

The Christmas cactus is a short-day plant. If the light is improper, it will also affect its blooming. Generally, about 4 hours of light per day need to be ensured. If the light duration is too long, the flower buds will be affected, and it will fail to bloom.

Generally, the care of the Christmas cactus requires it to enjoy sufficient light during the day, while at night it should be in a completely dark environment. In this way, its flower bud differentiation can be ensured and it can bloom as soon as possible. If a dark environment cannot be ensured at night, we can cover it with a cardboard shell at night, and that will basically do.

3. Pruning

Generally, if you want the Christmas cactus to bloom normally and produce more flowers, proper pruning is needed. Old branches will consume relatively more nutrients, which will affect the sprouting of new branches, and then blooming will be limited. Therefore, overly long and old branches need to be cut off, so that new buds can be promoted to sprout.

Moreover, it is fine to have one flower bud open per branch on each side. If multiple flower buds open, it is best to remove one, so that normal blooming can be ensured. Otherwise, it will cause excessive consumption of nutrients, and neither flower will bloom well.
