Thickening bonsai branches is a problem many bonsai growers want to solve. Here is a fast method that loosens the subcutaneous tissue by loosening the trunk. This method is more convenient, easier, faster and lower in cost than other methods.

1. How to do it.

When you find that the branch at the reserved point is too thin, pinch the base of the branch point with the index finger and thumb of your left hand to prevent the base from coming loose or breaking, grip the middle of the branch with your right hand, then gently sway it at a small angle to the front, back, left and right. The swaying goes from small to large, until it has been swayed to about 45 degrees in each direction, and each direction must be swayed seven to eight times. The purpose is to loosen the local tissue, thereby stimulating the unstable cortex, promoting the regeneration of plant cells. The growth of tissues and organs, and growth as a whole, is based on cell growth; cells do this through cell division, increasing the number of cells and increasing volume.

2. Timing.

It should be determined that in the plant growing season, the growth temperature required by different plants is different. The suitable growth temperature for subtropical plants (such as elm, Chinese elm, Chinese hackberry and firethorn) is 25-35°C. We consider April to September to be the growing season for tree stumps in East China. This stage is the best operating period. Morning or evening of the day should be more suitable. Try to avoid the high heat at noon.

3. Number of operations.

For the parts whose branches have been swayed and loosened, we should observe the coarseness more often; the interval between swayings should be about 10 days, and the operation should be carried out again every ten days. When proper coarseness is reached, swaying should be stopped immediately, otherwise it will cause excessive size and thickness. Secondary branches and primary branches are the same; local branches can increase more than threefold in the same year.

4. Precautions

The branch diameter is too small, less than 0.3 cm. 2. New shoots are not suitable for the operation before they have lignified. 3. Sway slowly; local bark breakage is not allowed. 4. Protect the branch's shoots during the operation to prevent the appearance of flower buds. After each swaying, the stem must be fixed promptly so as to create favorable conditions for the next shaping.
