Potted Cultivation Methods and Care Tips for Weigela

WeigelaIt blooms at the turn of spring and summer and is one of the important flowering shrubs in Northeast and North China. Weigela has dense branches and leaves, trumpet-shaped flowers, and brilliant colors. Its flowering period generally lasts about two months, giving a long ornamental window. So how should potted weigela be grown at home? What should you pay attention to in the daily care of potted weigela?
I. Cultivation Methods
1. Soil Selection
Weigelahas no strict requirements for soil and can tolerate poor soil, but it is afraid of waterlogging, so choose a well-drained sandy loam. The soil should be deep, moist, and rich in humus; this kind of soil is most suitable for the growth of weigela.
2. Fertilizing
Weigelalikes fertile soil. When potting, you can mix garden soil with rice husk ash and apply a small amount of base fertilizer. During the growing season, weigela should be fertilized 1-2 times a month, and decomposed liquid fertilizer can be chosen as the fertilizer. Every 2 to 3 years, during winter or the dormant period in early spring, also dig a trench around the roots and apply fertilizer once.
3. Temperature
The suitable growing temperature for weigela is between 15-35 degrees, and the suitable temperature during the flowering period is between 18 and 22 degrees. It is relatively cold-tolerant and can overwinter outdoors in northern regions, and it can be placed in a sheltered, sunny spot.
4. Watering
Pay attention to watering during the growing season of weigela. When it resumes growth in spring, gradually increase the amount of watering to keep the potting soil moist. During high summer temperatures, you can water a little more to maintain sufficient moisture and spray water to lower the temperature. Because weigela is afraid of waterlogging, pay attention to preventing waterlogging during the rainy season. Water thoroughly 1 to 2 times a month to meet its growth needs.
II. Precautions
1. Propagation methods: seed propagation, cutting propagation, layering propagation, and also division.
2. Pests and diseases: not many, occasionally harmed by aphids and red spider mites, which can be killed by spraying dimethoate.
3. Pruning: It is sensitive to spring drought and late spring cold and is prone to tip dieback, so before flowering, dried and withered branches should be pruned away, and after full bloom, flower branches should be pruned promptly to promote branch growth. Old branches have a short lifespan, so heavy pruning from the base is needed for renewal.
How to Grow Weigela in Pots
I. Timing
Its sprouting ability is relatively strong in spring, so the survival rate when planting at this time is also higher. Spring is also its growing season and the best time for repotting and changing soil.
II. Preparatory Work
1. Flower pot: The best flower pot is an unglazed ceramic pot, which has better air permeability and drainage. Other flower pots are also acceptable, but it is best not to choose plastic flower pots.
2. Soil: 1 part rice husk ash + 3 parts garden soil, mix evenly and it is ready to use. But before potting, you can place some crushed stones or relatively hard plastic foam and similar objects at the bottom of the flower pot; this can increase the soil's air permeability and drainage.
III. Selection of Plants
1. Generally, you can directly combine potting with repotting the plant in spring. Dig out the entire plant directly, divide it into multiple plants, and pot them separately.
2. Before potting, treat the roots. First clean off all the original soil from the roots, then prune away all old roots and dead roots, and according to the size of the flower pot, cut overly long root fibers shorter.
