When growing Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) at home, it often ends up tall and thin. What causes this? Xiao Qi will explain. In the end, it all comes down to etiolation (leggy growth).

The reason the new branches of Kalanchoe grow tall is a lack of light, which causes etiolation. During the growing season, Kalanchoe must be given sufficient light so it does not become leggy, so the internodes stay compact and the branches stay firm and thick. Apart from the high-temperature summer season, when it should be shaded appropriately, it can be given full sun in the other seasons; only then will Kalanchoe grow well and not become leggy. A lack of light has another downside: Kalanchoe easily fails to bloom or blooms sparsely. For Kalanchoe to form buds and bloom, it must have sufficient light; at least four hours of light per day is needed to meet the conditions for blooming. After the Start of Autumn, it must be given sufficient light so it can bloom abundantly.

The simplest way is to look at the leaves; thin leaves are also a sign of fertilizer deficiency. During the growing season, a supply of fertilizer and water at least once a month is essential so Kalanchoe can grow vigorously and bloom abundantly. In the high-temperature summer season, do not fertilize; after the Start of Autumn, switch to potassium dihydrogen phosphate, about three times, at intervals of 7-10 days, so there will be more flower buds and the buds that form will not drop. In the other growing seasons, a once-a-month multi-element mixed fertilizer is enough.

One question is whether pruning is needed; the answer is yes, and it should be heavy pruning. As in the picture above, from the spot where it was pruned last time, keep one to two pairs of leaves and cut directly; if it is not the blooming season, keep pruning continuously, and just stop pruning before the Start of Autumn. Only then will it bloom abundantly, because each side shoot of Kalanchoe produces one flower cluster.
