Hetian Jade Craftsmanship

Step one: Material selection

Choosing suitable material is the first step in design and carving. The quality of the material determines the theme and the level of detail in the carved work. Only premium jade material can be finely carved.

: Material cutting

Generally, first examine whether the surface shape and characteristics of the Hetian jade material have any flamboyant colors that can be utilized. Next, use a strong light to examine the internal structural texture of the Hetian jade material, the development and direction of cracks, flaws and veins, and other characteristics. Then, based on the comprehensive condition of the material and the possible processing theme, determine whether to carve the entire raw material as one piece or cut it for processing.

Step three: Shaping

Based on careful examination of the selected material, thoroughly understand the jade material, remove flaws and avoid veins; according to the chosen theme, grind the cut jade material into a rough shape.

Step four: Design

Based on the conceived theme, according to the jade material's texture, seed skin and flamboyant colors, draw and outline on the jade material.

Step five: Rough carving

First, use a diamond powder cutting wheel to remove the jade flesh outside the ink lines, and use the cutting wheel to press and rub out the large outline. Then switch to a grinding wheel and rod pins to refine the shape, polishing until satisfied. This is the first step of carving - creating the general form.

Step six: Fine detailing

Adjust the large form, determine the details. At this point, focus on smoothing and correcting the details simultaneously, polishing until there is not a bit of excess jade flesh, and the smoothing is complete. The finished carving does not yet have the mutton-fat roundness and smoothness of the Hetian jade you see.

Step seven: Polishing

Through steps including applying paste, grinding, wiping, fine polishing, brightening and waxing, the jade color becomes smoother, while also forming a protective layer on the surface of the finished Hetian jade, ultimately becoming a magnificent work of art full of Chinese cultural heritage!

In actual operation, some processes such as refining, grinding and polishing require different equipment and repeated work. Some extraordinarily exquisite jade carvings require meticulous crafting by masters, pouring in tremendous effort to complete. Seeing finished products polished by one's own hands spread across China and even go global - this is the greatest sense of achievement for every carving master in Shopkeeper Hua's team!
