Recently quite a few plant lovers have been asking Huahua in the backend why their own Monstera has been grown for so long but still will not split. Today, Huahua is going to share with everyone why Monstera does not split!
Seedling Monstera does not split
Gardening Complete
Monstera at the seedling stage does not have a strong enough root system, and its leaves are mainly complete heart shapes, but as the Monstera grows, starting from about the fifth leaf, holes will gradually appear.
Measures to encourage splitting:
1. Increase light
Seedling Monstera needs to receive relatively more light to promote faster leaf growth. If the seedling is kept in a dark, lightless environment for a long time, the plant will grow very slowly, and the holes that form in the leaves will also tend to be smaller.
2. Water less
Seedling Monstera has very little need for water, and a small amount of water can promote leaf splitting. Watering heavily instead causes the leaves to only grow larger without splitting.
Adult Monstera does not split

Some friends will find that their Monstera has already been bought back for one or two years and still does not split. Then you need to look for the reason in the Monstera's daily care.

Light too strong or insufficient
In late spring and summer, when the temperature is relatively high, you should avoid the Monstera
being exposed to direct sunlight
. But you also cannot keep the Monstera in adark indoor space
without any sunlight. It is best to place it ina diffused-light environment
, such as the living room, to receivesoft, bright light
。▼
Insufficient water
Unlike seedling Monstera, adult Monstera has a relatively large demand for water. In summer, generally
water once every 1-2 days
, and also frequentlyspray water
on the leaves to raise the humidity of the surrounding environment and promote leaf growth and splitting.▼
Improper fertilizing
After reaching adulthood, Monstera has a relatively large demand for fertilizer. It is best to apply
1-2 times a month of decomposed cake fertilizer water
. When fertilizing, combine it with watering, dig open the potting soil at the edge of the flowerpot, bury the fertilizer in, and then cover it with soil. You bought a fake "Monstera"

If none of the above matches your Monstera's situation, then it is very likely that you bought a fake Monstera - Alocasia macrorrhizos.
(Alocasia macrorrhizos seedling)
Alocasia macrorrhizos is very similar to Monstera that has not yet split during the seedling stage. So, if your Monstera never splits, then it is very likely that what you bought is Alocasia macrorrhizos.

Repotting and division
Gardening Complete
Some plant lovers also report that their Monstera originally did split, but the newly grown leaves recently suddenly do not split. This is a reminder that it is time to repot and divide your Monstera!
1. Remove from the pot
Pat the outside of the flowerpot, take the Monstera out of the original flowerpot, break apart the soil ball, and remove the potting soil.
2. Divide the plant
Rinse the roots of the Monstera clean with water after removing the soil, and divide it into several separate plants.
3. Trim the roots
Cut off all the rotten parts, dead roots and weak roots on the roots, cut off the bottom rhizome, and keep one bud point.
4. Potting
Repot the divided and pruned Monstera. First lay a layer of humus soil on the bottom of the pot, then place the Monstera in the middle of the pot, and finally fix it in place with soil.
5. Water thoroughly
The first watering must be thorough, after that you can water once every 1-2 days, and be careful not to let water accumulate.
Monstera rhizome cuttings
Gardening Complete
When dividing the plant, Huahua says do not throw away the cut-off rhizomes, because if you use them for cuttings you can get another Monstera!
1. Mix the soil
Mix leaf mold and garden soil at a 1:1 ratio to make humus soil.
2. Bury the rhizome
Place the rhizome flat into the soil, the roots must all be buried, but the cut ends at both ends must be left exposed outside. After burying, water thoroughly, then place it in a cool, ventilated place for care.
That is all for sharing the knowledge about Monstera splitting,
