When Huahua first started keeping succulents, every day she hoped her succulents would fill the pot and produce a bunch of little babies. But while everyone else's had already produced two litters, Huahua's still looked the same. Later Huahua learned that this is what you have to do to make succulents grow fast, fill the pot, and produce pups!

Beheading

Yang Hua Da Quan

The most brutal and also most effective way to turn a single-headed succulent into a multi-headed one is beheading, which removes the succulent's apical dominance and helps it sprout multiple small heads. Next, Huahua will use Fuji Nishiki as an example to explain how to behead.

1. Find a sharp small knife and disinfect it. Keep the bottom two layers of leaves and cut off all the rest.

2. After about 20 days, the cut part will grow small heads.

3. The cut-off head and the leaves can be re-cuttings.

Besides beheading to make succulents produce multiple heads, when a succulent becomes leggy, the beheading method can also be used.

Beheading leggy succulents

1. Cut off the entire head of the succulent, leave the leggy stem at a length you are satisfied with, and cut it off.

2. After about 20 days, new buds will grow on the leggy stem.

3. The cut-off head can be repotted.

Pinching out the growing tip

Yang Hua Da Quan

Some flower lovers may not have the heart to be ruthless with their succulents. Such flower lovers can choose a gentler method - pinching out the growing tip. Huahua will still use Aeonium 'Zwartkop' as an example for the explanation.

1. Remove the few leaves at the very center of the succulent, remove apical dominance, and stimulate the growth of small heads.

2. After about 15-20 days, new small heads can grow out.

3. Some succulents, after having their growing tip pinched out, will also grow new small heads at the root stem.

Leaf cuttings

Leaf cuttings can also be considered one of the easiest ways to get multiple heads. Huahua will use the peach egg succulent as an example to explain how to do leaf cuttings.

1. Let the freshly removed succulent leaf dry in a cool, ventilated place for 3-5 days, then place it flat on the soil surface. When watering, do not pour water on the leaf.

2. After about 15 days, the small head can grow out, and after about 30 days, the small head can grow into a bean sprout!

Recommended succulents that produce multiple heads

Yang Hua Da Quan

Friends who like succulents that fill the pot can choose, when first starting to keep succulents, some varieties that are relatively easy to grow multiple heads on their own.

1. Sedum 'Little Beauty'

2. Sedum japonicum 'Tokyo Sun'

3. Echeveria 'Jade Butterfly'

4. Sedum rubrotinctum

5. Graptosedum 'Bronze'
