Petunia - as a flower that easily fills out a pot and gives beginners a full sense of achievement, it is deeply loved by flower lovers. Ever since I grew Haishi Shenglou once on my small balcony, I deeply realized that this huge thing is not suitable for my home. Once you grow it, you have to give up many other flowers, but I still sow it every year, because my mom really likes this kind of plant that is full of flowers all at once, so every year I sow in autumn, and after planting out I send it to my mom's balcony, waiting for it to burst into bloom in spring~

First I will post two pictures to open the thread, then update slowly

First, take out a coconut brick, put it in a bucket, turn on the tap, and soak it to expand. Coconut coir, like peat, holds water very well, but unlike peat, when peat looks dry on the outside, it is still very wet inside, while when coconut coir looks dry on the outside, it is pretty much dry inside too, so personally I feel it is even easier to use than peat~~

After it has fully expanded, drain the water and set it aside for later use

Here I will talk about the petunias sown this year. From the photos, don't they look very leggy? Yes, indeed very leggy! Because of the miserable weather with almost no sun for two months!!!

Look at the trailing petunia Ice Pink in the lower right, so leggy that it is leaning crooked!!! Don't ask why I did not rotate the pot, this kind of crooked neck can happen in just one day!!!

Add to that the fact that I am a closed-balcony grower, a crooked neck is inevitable!!!!

Today I will choose you, this crooked-neck trailing petunia!

The flower pot uses a 30*30 caliber. Petunias can grow very large, and the planting-out pot should be at least 25cm in caliber. For chicken manure I use decomposed black chicken manure with added phosphorus

Spread a layer of clay pebbles on the bottom of the flower pot, enough that the holes at the bottom of the pot are not visible. Some flower lovers just use a screen pad directly, which is also fine, but personally I like to add clay pebbles to increase the drainage layer and improve air permeability

Pour a little coconut coir into the soil-mixing container. Because it was just drained, it will be a bit clumpy, so use a rake to loosen it slightly

Add vermiculite and perlite to increase air permeability. My usual ratio is coconut coir:vermiculite:perlite = 3:1:1

Mix well, it feels like mixing rice

The pot is large, so pour all of this soil into the flower pot and press it down slightly

Then start adding base fertilizer. There are two ways to add base fertilizer. One is to put it below the plant without direct contact with the plant, with another layer of soil on top. The other is to spread it around the plant. Theoretically, the second method can better play the role of base fertilizer, because base fertilizer placed underneath often washes away with the water flow before the plant can absorb it. But I find adding it around troublesome, so I still go my own way and put it at the bottom. Anyway, base fertilizer can take effect slowly and will not be too wasteful~~~

First add a layer of decomposed black chicken manure, just sprinkle a thin layer

A layer of bone meal. Bone meal has high phosphorus content. If you want a large amount of flowers, this is very good

Pour another pot of soil over the fertilizer and press it down slightly

The best time to plant out petunias is when the roots have filled the bottom of the pot. At this time it is very convenient to remove from the pot, the roots are not damaged, and there is almost no need for recovery. Before planting out petunias, do not water. Wait until it dries naturally and is just about to need watering, then planting out is best.

Do not remove from the pot yet. Place the entire temporary pot on the soil surface to compare. It is obvious that the soil surface of the temporary pot is quite far from the rim of the planting-out pot, so take away the temporary pot and continue filling the planting-out pot with soil.... Petunias really eat up soil!!!

After spreading another pot of soil, put the temporary pot in to compare, and this time it is about right

Adjust the position of the temporary pot so the plant looks like it is in the center of the planting-out pot, then leave the temporary pot there and fill soil around it

Fill the soil until it is about level with the surface of the temporary pot, and that is enough

Lift the temporary pot gently, and you can clearly see that there is a hole in the soil surface of the planting-out pot the size of the temporary pot

Gently squeeze the temporary pot with your hands so that the soil inside separates slightly from the pot wall

Turn the temporary pot upside down, give it a gentle pat and a shake, and it comes out perfectly, with the roots not damaged at all

Place the petunia into the hole in the planting-out pot, it fits so well, perfect

Although the coconut coir was soaked in water, because it was drained, still water it thoroughly once so the soil has plenty of moisture and it is easy for the petunia to root and grow. PS, coconut coir is very soft, and watering can easily create holes, so here you should use a watering can

Water has already leaked from the bottom of the pot, OK, remove the watering can

Although it needs sufficient watering, it is not to let the petunia sit in water, so pour away the water in the tray, place the planting-out pot somewhere that can catch water, let the water in the soil drain away a bit more, then place it in a bright spot without direct sunlight to recover for one or two days.... In fact, because this time the roots were not damaged at all during planting out, I do not need to let it recover, and the next day I can take it out into the sun
