Today a fellow gardener asked me again how to deal with yellowing leaves on gardenia, and sent me pictures, so I'll post them here for everyone to see.

For the situation in the pictures, first cut off the dried leaves, use mancozeb at 1:800 or thiophanate-methyl diluted with water at 1:1000 and spray, once every 7-10 days, generally about three times is enough to ease the dry-leaf condition.

Water the gardenia with ferrous sulfate at 1:1000 diluted in water, water once when the potting soil is completely dry, and stop once new leaves emerge and are no longer yellowing; after recovery, water with ferrous sulfate about once a month.

The leaves dry up and drop; from the pictures it is already fairly serious now, and this is the sign of leaf blight and downy mildew. The gardenia's pot is a non-breathable pot, plus the surface is covered with pebbles, and indoor growing has poor ventilation, so the roots stay in an airless environment for a long time; when the soil is too wet it easily causes downy mildew and leaf blight. If carbendazim had been sprayed regularly before the disease appeared, this situation would not have happened. The gardenia is a flower of the south, and likes acidic soil; when the acidic substances in the soil are lacking, the main sign is green leaf veins with yellow elsewhere. From the picture it is obvious that it is iron deficiency, so iron elements must be replenished in time to let it resume growth; only after the leaves stop yellowing and turn green again can it grow normally. In the process of growing gardenia, replenishing ferrous sulfate solution about once a month is the best method. Otherwise this situation easily occurs.

Why does the gardenia not bloom? The two conditions of the gardenia now are the main reasons causing it not to bloom. After the plant returns to normal growth, pay attention to the following points in care, and it is sure to bloom every year: during the growing season, apply ferrous sulfate about once a month; after moving indoors in winter, spray carbendazim once a month; apart from appropriate shading in summer, give full sun in the other seasons; during the growing season, supply fertilizer water once to twice a month; plant with loose, breathable pots and soil, and just water thoroughly when the soil surface is dry.
