Yunfu's Sapindus mukorossi industry development gains support from Beijing Forestry University

BFU supports Yunfu's Sapindus mukorossi industry

Beijing Forestry University and the Yunfu Municipal Government of Guangdong Province have recently established a long-term cooperation mechanism, and the two sides will carry out cooperation in areas such as Sapindus mukorossi research and development and promotion.

In recent years, the Sapindus mukorossi research team at the Energy Center of Beijing Forestry University has achieved notable results in the selection and breeding of superior Sapindus mukorossi varieties, efficient cultivation, sustainable industry evaluation, and the development of a technology road map for multi-generation industry. Over the past 6 years, this team has collected 190 superior trees and special germplasm resources in 14 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) where Sapindus mukorossi is distributed in China, and has established a 100,000-mu Sapindus mukorossi raw material trial and demonstration forest in Jianning, Fujian, as well as a 116-mu germplasm resource nursery of clones and half-sib families, compiled an annual phenological table for Sapindus mukorossi, preliminarily clarified flower bud differentiation and pollination mechanisms, and developed technologies such as insect-mediated controlled pollination, shaping and pruning and flower and fruit regulation, and formula fertilization for Sapindus mukorossi.

According to experts, for every 1 tonne of Sapindus mukorossi fruit processed, the full life cycle from raw material cultivation to processing and utilization can achieve a net carbon sequestration of 30.57 tonnes, with significant economic benefits. In the future, the Sapindus mukorossi industry will follow a development model of "clonal plantation model + soap-oil-charcoal forest multi-generation industry chain."
