How to Grow Angel Wing Begonia? Master These Points and Flowers Will Fill Your Garden
Angel wing begonia (Begonia coccinea) is named for the characteristic shape of its leaves. They are fibrous, cane-type begonias, grown for their beautiful foliage and brilliant coral-pink flowers.
Climate
In warmer regions, angel wing begonia can be grown year-round if planted in a sheltered spot with humidity above 50%. In cooler climates, it is best grown indoors year-round, or overwintered indoors.
Growing Conditions
Angel wing begonia likes conditions similar to other begonias. Warmth, moderate humidity and bright indirect sunlight are all important, and good air circulation is too. Place indoor angel wing begonias in a light east- or west-facing window. Outdoor begonias need midday shade, protection from strong wind, and loamy or sandy, fast-draining soil. Indoor angel wing begonias can be moved outdoors in summer, but they must be placed in sheltered shade to prevent the leaves from scorching.
Watering Requirements
Adequate soil moisture is the key to successfully growing angel wing begonia. During the vigorous growing season, both potted and garden plants need regular watering, especially in hot or dry weather. Water until excess moisture runs out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot, or until the garden soil feels moist 10-20cm down from the top. Overwatering increases the risk of root problems and disease in angel wing begonia, so always check the soil before watering, and water only when the surface feels dry.
