Diseases that occur due to immunodeficiency are also numerous in number. Selective immunoglobulin deficiency alone includes atopic asthma, allergies to foods such as milk, and in the immunoglobulin-deficient population, about one third will develop upper and lower respiratory tract infections. These include rhinitis such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, bronchopneumonia, and others, but bronchiectasis is not very common, at less than about 5%.

IgA blood products

In selective immunoglobulin deficiency, gastrointestinal diseases are very common, and about one third of people will also have collagen vascular disease. IgA deficiency is also one of the common categories of immunoglobulin deficiency, in which IgG and IgM are normal, with an incidence of about 1 in 700. Familial cases are relatively rare and mostly sporadic, but familial cases can accumulate over several generations. IgA deficiency also shows clear regional and ethnic differences.

Treatment of IgA deficiency mainly targets infections, allergies, and collagen vascular disease. IgA blood products are now available, and the blood cells within them must be washed before use; it is best to conduct test analysis on the individual before use, and special attention must be paid to allergic reactions during infusion. If an individual does not also have IgG subclass deficiency, gamma globulin must not be infused, otherwise a relatively dangerous allergic reaction is likely to occur.

Sites where sinusitis occurs

In selective immunoglobulin deficiency, rare types also include IgA secretion deficiency, IgM deficiency, and others. Generally, when serum IgA is below 0.05 g/L, a person will have abnormal antibody responses to microbial stimulation and will therefore be prone to recurrent infectious diseases. In particular, Gram-negative bacillus sepsis is likely to occur, with rapid onset and a tendency to develop systemic acute infection, and it may also be complicated by multiple abscesses; if the course of disease is long, it will develop into pyemia.
