Calla lilies are elegant and noble, and their flower language is happiness and purity, symbolizing "holy devotion, eternal union, and good fortune." In European and American countries they are often used as bridal bouquets. Colored calla lilies are called "cai ma" by flower enthusiasts, and their colors include red, pink, orange, yellow and so on. They are deeply loved by flower enthusiasts, and below we explain the planting techniques for colored calla lilies.
1. Soil
For planting calla lilies, choose a clay pottery pot or purple clay pot with a diameter of 30-40 cm, and select deep, fertile, loose, slightly acidic sandy loam soil, which can be made by mixing leaf mold, garden soil and fine sand in a ratio of 6:3:1.
2. Temperature
A suitable temperature can promote calla lily blooming. If the temperature is below 10°C, the flowering period is delayed, and 0°C may cause death. Keep the temperature at 15-25°C.
3. Potting
Place a layer of relatively crushed plastic foam pieces at the bottom of the pot, and add some nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer to the potting soil. Select 4-5 thick tubers with buds and trim them slightly. Put 3-5 plants in each pot, with the buds facing upward, and cover with a layer of thick soil. Then water, place in a shady spot, and move into sunlight once new leaves grow.
4. Watering
Calla lilies like a humid environment, so water more, keeping the potting soil moist but not waterlogged, and be careful not to splash water onto the flowers when sprinkling, as this can easily cause leaf soft rot. After May, try not to water. After entering the dormant period, the calla lily leaves will turn yellow, and afterward place the calla lily in a cool, ventilated place for care.
5. Fertilizing
The growth of calla lilies requires a large amount of nutrient fertilizer. Before flowering, apply more dilute fertilizer, applying a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound liquid once every 10 days.
6. Light
Calla lilies like light, and they like long light rather than strong light, so they should be placed in a place with sufficient light, with 4-6 hours of light every day. If there is insufficient light during the flowering period, they will only produce buds and not bloom.
7. Division propagation
After the flowering period or after the dormant period, dig up the tubers of a robust mother plant, divide them into 2-3 clumps according to the size of the original tubers, with each clump carrying 2-3 buds, and repot them; they can bloom after 3 months.
