Acclimation: How to acclimate plants bought online and delivered by courier?

Choosing flowers

If you are a beginner at growing flowers, try to choose local plants as much as possible. Growing southern flowers in the north or northern flowers in the south requires certain technical skills (for example, when caring for azaleas in the north, a small amount of ferrous sulfate needs to be added when watering to increase the acidity of the potting soil); in addition, try to choose species that bloom in season, as these are easier to acclimate and recover.

Care after getting home

1. Repotting and planting

If a newly bought flower has bare roots or its pot is unsuitable, it needs to be repotted and planted. Repotting should be done promptly; waiting a few days is not good for acclimation and recovery.

For repotting and planting, first choose a suitable pot. A pot that is too large or too small is not good for the flower's growth. Using a small pot for a large flower is not good for root growth, and using a large pot for a small flower easily causes water accumulation and root rot.

After bringing the flower home, if it has already become very dehydrated and dry, you can water it first, then plant it in the evening.

When repotting, first take the flower out of its original pot. You can moisten the potting soil, carefully take out the plant together with the root ball, and try not to damage the plant's roots, as this will also make acclimation and recovery easier.

Acclimation: How to manage flowers during the acclimation period?

When planting, first put soil in the pot. When it is about right, place the plant together with the root ball into it, then fill in soil, covering only the original soil ball the plant came with. It does not need to be too deep (except for certain special plants).

After the plant is planted, the next step is acclimation. If repotting is not needed, you can skip this step and go directly to acclimation.

After repotting, watering is necessary. It is best to water thoroughly, not just halfway. This watering is also called settling water, and its purpose is to make the roots and soil closely combine.

2. Acclimation

For newly bought flowers, whether repotted or not, they must go through the acclimation step and it cannot be skipped.

During acclimation, place the flower in a relatively fixed, bright-indirect and ventilated place. Do not place it in a fully shaded place, as this is instead not good for the plant's recovery (except for completely shade-loving plants). If the temperature is too high, provide appropriate shading.

During the acclimation period, water by the see-dry-see-wet method. This watering method is suitable in most cases. Do not fertilize during the acclimation period.

As for how long to acclimate, different plant species require different times. In general, small plants acclimate faster than large ones, and herbaceous plants acclimate faster than woody ones.

3. Care after acclimation

After successfully passing through the acclimation period, you can care for it normally according to its growth habits.
