My best friend came to visit my home and brought along a bag of "onion bulbs". I thought they really were onions, because they looked so much like them, but it turned out they were the bulbs of two kinds of flowers. She said the flowers these "onions" produce are big and beautiful, and if I didn't believe her, I should just try!

Half-believing, I planted them in the soil, and it turned out they weren't one kind of flower but two: one was a hyacinth, and the other was an amaryllis! The hyacinth bloomed first, and the amaryllis was slower, and its colors are also very diverse. No wonder the flowers changed every single day! Thank goodness I didn't stir-fry them and eat them!

Now let me share some care tips!

Amaryllis

Amaryllis is what people often call "dui hong". For the soil, choose a loose, breathable, well-draining sandy soil. You can mix peat soil with perlite or coarse sand!

It likes a warm, humid environment. Usually you can place it in a bright spot with diffused light. It is afraid of waterlogging, so watering should not be too frequent, as it easily leads to rot!

Before the flower stalk emerges, you can spray a common potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, spraying 2 to 3 times a month, which can make the flowers bigger and more beautiful, and the colors more vivid!

After the flowers fade, cut off the flowers promptly. This way the nutrients flow back to the bulb, which can avoid consuming too many nutrients and make the amaryllis grow more vigorously!

Hyacinth

Hyacinth is also known as "yang shui xian". It comes in many colors, and its flowering period is from March to April. It can be grown in water or in soil; water culture is cleaner and more hygienic!

If growing in soil, choose a fertile, alkaline soil rich in organic matter. You can mix garden soil plus leaf mold plus coarse sand plus bone meal, in a ratio of 5:3:1:1

Hyacinth does not particularly like fertilizer. Applying a phosphorus-potassium fertilizer once before and after flowering is enough. If growing in soil, keep the soil moist. It is afraid of water accumulation, otherwise it will also cause the bulb to rot.

Hyacinth is especially fond of light. Usually you can place it in a sunny, well-ventilated spot. If there is little light, it will lead to poor plant growth! If your home has poor light and little sunlight, you can use artificial light instead of sunlight, and the effect is also very good!

These two kinds of "big onions", aren't they beautiful?
