Petunias generally bloom in clusters and clumps, with not only an attractive plant shape but also brilliant flowers in rich colors, and even the process of growing them in pots is relatively simple. For experienced flower lovers this is naturally second nature, and for beginner flower lovers it is also very easy to learn and grow them well. Today, Hua Shao will share with you the home potting method for petunias.
1. Sowing
In southern regions there is no need to distinguish the sowing season; they can be planted all year round, while in northern regions it is best to sow in spring and summer, as this will increase the seed germination rate. Sowing is very simple: first moisten the soil slightly with water, then scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil. There is no need to cover the seeds with soil; afterward keep the soil moist. You can use a spray bottle to mist water gently, or use the bottom-watering method to replenish water for them. Keep the temperature at around 20 degrees, and after a week you will see the petunias sprout.
2. Cuttings
Petunias also easily survive through cuttings. Generally speaking, choose a suitable length of stem, and except for keeping a few leaves at the top of the stem, cut off all the rest of the leaves, then insert it into loose soil and place it in a cool, well-ventilated spot. When pruning the branch, try to choose healthy stems, keep the cut surface flat, and always sterilize the tools.
3. Watering
After the seedlings grow a little bigger, you can gradually reduce the amount of watering and slowly move them to a place with sufficient light for care. Petunias love a warm, humid environment with sufficient light, so you must give them enough sunlight, otherwise it is very easy for the flowers not to open easily. Petunias are not a flood-tolerant variety and dislike waterlogged soil, so you should choose loose, well-draining soil, properly control the amount of watering, and do not water too much at one time.
4. Pruning
Petunia is a vine plant, so it is best to prepare support; you can insert a stick into the flower pot so that it can grow by twining. You should also prune properly: when it grows to about 7 leaves, pinch off the growing tip, which can make the flowers bloom more and larger.
5. Explosive blooming
If you want the petunias at home to explode into a potful of blooms, pay attention to frequent pinching, as this can promote the sprouting of side branches and keep the whole plant compact with dense flowering. During the plant's growth period, you can pinch once at regular intervals, but be careful not to do it too frequently, so as to avoid making the branches and leaves too sparse, which is not good for later growth.
