Put something at the bottom of the flower pot: it drains water, improves airflow, and still provides plenty of nutrients

The main reason flowers die in everyday care is over-attention, and too much watering and fertilizing is the key culprit. If the potting soil drains and breathes poorly, root rot becomes very likely. Today I want to share a few excellent soil mixes; using them to grow flowers can prevent root rot and also provide certain nutrients to the plants.

1. Wood shavings

Wood shavings are loose, breathable, and water-retentive, and they also have a heat-preserving effect, which is quite good for plant root growth. However, fresh wood shavings cannot be used directly for growing flowers; they need to be composted before being mixed into the soil. Put the wood shavings in a thick plastic bag, add an appropriate amount of clean water, seal it, and leave it in the sun for one to two months; generally, once the color turns black, it is fully composted.

2. Charcoal

Charcoal has a rather loose texture; it not only has fairly strong drainage and breathability, but its moisture-retention function is also quite good, and it can prevent root rot and promote healthy flower growth. In general use, first break the charcoal into small pieces, wash them clean, let them dry, and then put them into the potting soil.

3. Chinese medicine residue

Chinese medicine is mainly composed of animal and plant materials, and it contains fairly rich nutrient elements. After composting, Chinese medicine residue becomes very good nutrient soil. Generally, we can put it into a flower pot in layers of soil and medicine residue, then cover the top with a layer of plastic wrap and place it in the sun; usually after about two months it is fully composted, and using it to grow flowers can provide plenty of nutrients to the plants.

4. Loofah sponge

Loofah is a fairly common vegetable in daily life. Generally, after the loofah gets old, we can use the loofah sponge for growing flowers. When repotting flowers, we can crush the seeds in the loofah sponge and then mix it into the potting soil; this can keep the potting soil loose and breathable and also provide certain nutrients to the plants.
