We may not have heard much about the peony plant, but you have surely seen its huge flowers at some point. This plant is relatively easy to care for, but it can also develop minor problems, such as root rot. Many friends get stuck right here. So what should you do when a peony plant develops root rot?

1. Too much water

Watering is a major issue in plant care, and the peony plant needs a lot of attention when it comes to watering. We usually need to check whether the potting soil has dried out completely. Some friends say the surface of the potting soil can be checked with the naked eye, but what about the inside? Of course, there is a way, and it is very simple: we insert a toothpick into the potting soil and then pull it out. If a lot of soil sticks to the toothpick, it means there is still enough moisture in the pot; if there is not much soil on it, it means it is fairly dry, and it needs to be watered in time. After each watering, we should put it in a cool, ventilated place to air out, so we can let the excess moisture in the pot dry out as quickly as possible and reduce the chance of root soaking.

2. Pests and diseases

If we neglect the peony for a long time, pests and diseases may appear. At first, the leaves may just turn a little yellow, but over time the peony will find it very hard to bloom, and its overall growth will not be very good. So we need to prevent and control pests and diseases. First, when watering, we can use water boiled with chili peppers or garlic water, because chili peppers and garlic both have very strong pungent odors, and garlic also has a sterilizing effect, which can prevent pest invasion. If pests have already been found, we can water with a fungicide to reach the roots directly and remove the pests.

3. Fertilizing

Even when fertilizing the peony, we cannot use concentrated fertilizer, because fertilizer that is too concentrated will burn the roots. We must first dilute the fertilizer with water before watering with it. If some friends think this weakens the fertilizer strength, we can achieve the effect by fertilizing multiple times, and that will work. Of course, when planting, we can put some rotted leaves and the peels of the melons and fruits we eat at the bottom of the pot, so that the plant has plenty of nutrients right after planting. In this way, we do not need to fertilize at the very beginning and can wait until the growing season to fertilize.

Peony root rot is mainly caused by improper care methods on our part, and it will improve a lot after we make improvements.
