Article 85 in the rose growing series
Yesterday Lanyao introduced the planting method for roses in the ground, so then the question came up:Can roses still be planted in the ground in summer?
This should be a problem many flower lovers have encountered recently, because no fewer than 5 flower lovers have come to Lanyao to ask about this issue, so today Lanyao will give a detailed introduction to the precautions for planting roses in the ground at different times. The best time to plant roses in the ground:The best time to plant roses in the ground is of course spring and autumn. In spring all things revive, and it is exactly the planting season. Whether in the south or the north, transplanting roses into the ground when spring warms up is the best choice.
Besides spring, autumn is also a good season for planting in the ground, but if it is a northern region, it is not recommended. Northern winters are severely cold. In order to help roses overwinter smoothly, it is recommended to plant them in the ground before autumn. When the root system grows well, the cold tolerance of roses will be relatively higher.
In regions where the winter temperature is above -5°C, both autumn and winter are fine for planting in the ground, with basically no impact. So what about summer? Can roses be planted in the ground in summer?
For planting roses in the ground in summer, we need to handle it according to the situation. Generally our rose seedlings fall into two situations: one is originally potted with a soil ball, and the other is originally planted in the ground or bare-root.Potted seedlings with a soil ball:
If it is a potted seedling with a soil ball, it can also be planted in the ground in summer. Directly transplant it into the ground with the soil ball and water it thoroughly. After planting, pay attention to watering for half a month. Once the new roots have grown into the soil, you can leave it alone.Originally planted in the ground or bare-root:
In summer we rarely buy bare-root seedlings. If what you bought is bare-root, then do not place too much hope on its survival. For beginners, getting bare-root rose seedlings to survive in summer is indeed quite difficult.
There is now a fairly common situation, which is that roses originally planted in the ground need to be moved elsewhere for various reasons. If it happens to be summer, it is relatively risky. If they must be moved, it is recommended to dig the soil ball as large as possible (but often in the end the soil at the roots will crumble away). Besides preserving as much soil as possible, we also need to carry out large-scale pruning of the roses.
The severity of pruning is basically the same as the degree of heavy winter pruning. This is mainly to avoid branches being too long and too many, consuming too much, increasing the pressure on the roots, and causing the roses to die.Note:If it is a climbing rose, heavy pruning is also needed when bare-root transplanting in winter. It can survive and bloom without pruning, but the plant's later growth will be greatly affected.
Earlier Lanyao said that in northern regions it is not recommended to plant roses in the ground in autumn, for fear of frost damage in winter. So how exactly should roses be protected from the cold when grown outdoors in the north? How can roses overwinter safely outdoors in the great Northeast? Tomorrow Lanyao will share the specifics again.Welcome to follow Lanyao's WeChat public account: Lanyao Garden (ilanyao) for exchange and learning.
