The cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) was a fairly popular potted foliage plant some years ago. It does not need frequent care, is very simple to maintain, and has strong adaptability to its environment. It is extremely shade-tolerant, cold-tolerant and tolerant of poor soil. A cast iron plant kept in a shaded spot indoors can go several months without watering and still stay verdant.

The cast iron plant is also called the "spider-holding-egg" plant. Why that name? Because its rhizome produces berries that look like spider eggs.

It is an extremely shade-tolerant plant, and it is fairly cold-tolerant and not fussy about soil. But it does have drawbacks: it rarely blooms, and it grows especially slowly, so after several months of growing it you still see hardly any change.

Care tips for the cast iron plant:

1. Suitable potting soil

If you want the cast iron plant to grow faster, choose a loose, fertile, slightly acidic sandy soil. You can also mix leaf mould with appropriate garden soil and river sand at a ratio of about 5:3:2, and add some well-rotted organic fertiliser at the bottom of the pot; this will do a great job of promoting plant growth.

2. Reasonable watering

Although the cast iron plant is very drought-tolerant, suitable moisture can help it grow faster. Especially when summer temperatures are high, you can increase ventilation and keep the potting soil moist, which will do a great job of promoting plant growth. When ventilation is good and the environment is fairly dry, you can mist around it appropriately, which helps promote growth and the sprouting of side shoots.

3. Other care notes

The cast iron plant can be grown in the ground or in a pot. For ground planting, choose a spot with good drainage, preferably in half shade and half sun where it can get some light; avoid year-round full sun, otherwise the leaf surface can easily get scorched.

For potted care, keep the environment brightly lit and regularly clean dust off the leaves; this will better promote photosynthesis and benefit growth.

If you keep it in a dark indoor spot, remember to move it regularly to a place with diffused light, to avoid long-term darkness making the leaf colour dull.

The cast iron plant is slightly cold-tolerant, but in winter you should still keep the temperature above 0°C; it can also withstand a brief low of -2 to -3°C.

In addition, be careful to avoid an environment that is too dry, and maintain appropriate humidity; long-term dryness easily turns the leaves dry and yellow.
