Pothos has a powerful air-purifying effect, and many households grow pothos indoors. Today Huahua will introduce the home growing methods for pothos, as well as how to care for pothos when its leaves turn yellow and how to grow pothos in water.

Growing methods for pothos

1. Water more.Pothos likes to live in a moist environment, so watering more is best. In summer the weather is hot and water evaporates quickly, so in addition to watering more you should also mist the leaves. How much to water depends on the potting soil; larger pothos plants should be watered more.

2. Avoid direct sun exposure.Pothos grows in shaded places under large trees, so it is a shade-loving plant and cannot be exposed to direct sunlight, otherwise newly sprouted leaves will lose water and become smaller, with dull color, and the leaf edges are easily scorched. It only needs enough sunlight for photosynthesis.

3. Appropriate temperature.Although pothos does not like harsh sun, it is still quite sensitive to temperature. If the temperature is too low it is easily frostbitten. A room temperature of around 20 degrees is fine. If heating equipment is turned on, the pothos leaves must not be too close to it. Keep the indoor temperature above 10 degrees and pothos can safely get through winter.

4. Fertilizing。Because it is grown indoors, pothos does not absorb nutrients as abundantly as it would outdoors. It is recommended to apply fertilizer once every half month. You can buy fertilizer specially made for pothos on the market. Or ask the flower shop owner to help choose fertilizer.

5. Maintain air humidity.Pothos grows faster in environments with higher air humidity. It is recommended to maintain indoor humidity, and you can use a humidifier to increase air humidity. A specific method is to spray water around the pothos.

6. Soil. The soil should mainly be fertile, loose leaf mold with good drainage. Slightly acidic soil works best. In rooms with dim light, some lights should be turned on, as this helps the plant grow.

Pothos leaves turning yellow

Overall, when pothos leaves turn yellow, if it is grown in water it is mostly because there are bacteria in the water, while if it is grown in soil it may be root rot. Relatively speaking, water-grown pothos is more likely to develop yellow leaves than soil-grown pothos. The specific causes of pothos leaves turning yellow are mainly three aspects: improper watering, imbalanced light, and incorrect fertilizing.

1. Improper watering:Too much or too little watering can cause water-related yellowing in pothos. If the leaf surface is dark yellow and lusterless, and newly grown tips shrink and stop growing, it may be too much watering. But if the leaf tips or edges become withered and dry, new leaves grow normally, yet old leaves turn yellow and fall off, then it is insufficient watering.

2. Sunlight:Pothos likes shade. Strong light will cause the leaf tips and leaf edges of the plant to wither, and yellow patches will appear on the sun-facing parts of the leaves. On the contrary, if it is placed in a dark environment for a long time, the leaves cannot get enough sunlight and cannot form chlorophyll, which will also cause pothos leaves to turn yellow, so light needs to be supplemented in time.

3. Fertilizer yellowing:Applying too much fertilizer or too high a concentration when growing pothos, or a lack of fertilizer, can both cause pothos leaves to turn yellow. When too much fertilizer is applied, the pothos leaf surface is thick and lusterless, and the leaves do not look relaxed; old leaves turn yellow and fall off. You can reduce fertilizer by flushing. When fertilizer is lacking, the leaf color becomes lighter, appearing pale green or yellow, and fertilizer should be supplemented in time; in severe cases, the potting soil should be replaced.

Precautions for growing pothos in water

1. Newly cut pothos grown in water generally takes about one week to grow roots.

2. For newly cut pothos grown in water, change the water once every 7-10 days.
