Chengdu is a city that nurtures people, with humid air and not-too-strong ultraviolet rays. Before I started growing succulents, I loved this kind of climate, great for the skin! Later, after falling into the succulent rabbit hole, I hoped for sunshine every day, even if I got tanned as dark as anything, it didn't matter, as long as the succulents were beautiful. And once you fall into the hole, there's no concept of reason at all, you just know this one looks good, buy! That one you don't have yet, buy! Hauling soil and carrying flower pots bare-handed is nothing. The first thing I do when I get home from work is look at the succulents, even my cat knows that if it can't find me, it should go up to the rooftop to look for me...
This year is probably thanks to environmental cleanup efforts, Chengdu has had more sunny days, and the succulents are growing more comfortably too.
My succulents are all grown on my own rooftop, ventilation is no problem, in summer I have to build a shelter for rain and sun protection. Most of the time I just trim dead leaves, bury some 'little white medicine' once in early spring, and add another round in midsummer. The soil mix is about 70-80% granular, and as for pots, as long as they aren't glazed both inside and out, I'll use them, ones with feet are of course better, since after all the air circulation at the bottom of the pot is still poor. Other than that, it's basically relying on nature, I don't want to give too much human intervention, they will only grow into their natural form.
Chengdu is actually considered a reverse-hanging zone, but if you study the habits of succulents more, they will still be beautiful for you to see.
Hai Bai. Small and soft and cute, when the temperature difference is big in winter the leaf center shows a faint pink.
Eliza. Intense and passionate, easy to stand out among a group of succulents.
Swordsi Nova. Cold and aloof, among all the chubby soft-cute types it belongs to the domineering CEO type, basically everyone has one.
Helena? Sea Ice Grey? I really am a succulent illiterate. Fortunately they're all beautiful, shy and gentle.
Silhouette. That touch of red blush, whether deep or light, is just right, never tiresome to look at.
Old Red. I can never grow the Echeveria 'Jilian' line well, I envy others' little buns. But even like this it's uniquely cute.
Graptopetalum. In summer it was miserable, now it's starting to branch and color up. Before I couldn't get the beauty of Graptopetalum, now I do feel it's truly like a cool fairy, with its own charm.
Sugar. Frosted texture, a succulent with character.
Peach Egg. Is there anyone who doesn't like it?
The little ones.
Let's sunbathe. Little cuties.
Rouge.
Mountain Rose 'Honey Peach'. The pot is one I painted myself of the Little Prince, the back is the little fox. So I planted a rose. When the Little Prince found a rose, don't forget that little fox either.
Vanilla. The chubby Vanilla pups very vigorously, a little bit of red blood vessels paired with the jade-green base looks especially good.
I really like Vanilla. There are more I haven't photographed.
Sunset Peony Variegated. Top-heavy. When it colors up it turns red.
White Rose. The thin-leaf types all have a fairy quality. Although sometimes a slip in care makes the fairy fall to the mortal world.
White Chrysanthemum, the theme is pup pup pup. Just what I like.
Bouquet-style White Moon Shadow, no coloration, but the shape is nice, I'll keep working hard.
Lao Xue, also unremarkable at first glance, but especially cute when colored up. Unfortunately it died in the late-spring cold snap.
I forgot the name, as long as it's pretty it's fine.
Xiuyan, each little head like a bright red little hydrangea.
Sun Ice, pink-orange, with a faint fruity fragrance. Perfect.
Violet Queen? The color and leaf shape come with a queen's halo.
Fat Ice Jade, with a little bit of orange
Xina, what I like most is the shape of the leaf center, a very special straight-line shape.
Simpson Moon Shadow, don't let its small size fool you, it's already a woody stem, grown up from a leaf propagation.
There are quite a few people brought into the hobby by Su Jun's Aeoniums, I'm one of them, and I'm happily content with it.
The seller said it's Egg Aeonium, of course just take that with a grain of salt. More jelly-like than regular Green Velvet, and a bit more yellow. It's quite pretty too.
Green Velvet. The fresh green always makes one feel at ease.
Halloween just potted up, looking forward to the day you transform.
Another Halloween, I really hope it pups a lot.
Purple Velvet. The tender green of the leaf center and the deep purple of the outer edge complement each other beautifully.
Shaoxiu, it was originally a bigger bouquet, last year it black-rotted over summer, I cut many branches, so it has many children.
That little rose again
Blue Aeonium cristata.
Berkeley Variegated.
Evening Glow bigger than a face, with a very thick stem.
Orca. Slowly turning jelly-like.
Blue Light that has lost its coloration, the base color paired with the little pink edge is still fairy-like
Lemon Rose. A spring rain brought lots of pups
Lemon Rose cristata. Same sunshine and rain, yet more yellow and more jelly-like.
The earlier Ice Jade. From winter to spring, even fatter
Succulents are not lazy-person plants, they won't be beautiful for you to see if you just ignore them. But you also don't need to be careful all the time. Create a suitable environment for them, occasionally give them a pull when they're about to 'go astray'. Leave the rest to time. Your love, they all understand.
Those who've seen it, really not going to hit like?
