Rose growing series: article 83
Before this, Lanyao has always talked about how to grow roses in pots. Today, Lanyao wants to talk about how to grow roses in the ground.
You might say, what's there to say about growing in the ground? Any flower that can be grown in the ground will grow very well. Actually, that's not entirely true. In the past, the open space at home was used for growing vegetables. Now, a patch of open space is hard to come by, yet most of it is piled with gravel and construction waste.
Good soil will naturally let roses grow well, but if the soil itself is not ideal, then it takes some effort.
A flower friend who bought rose seedlings from Lanyao's shop asked me: *Can I plant them in the ground still in the pot?* If it's summer and you find watering hard to manage, planting the pot in the ground is indeed a good method, as it effectively lowers the soil temperature in the pot. But its cultivation management is similar to pot growing, so it doesn't count as ground planting.
If you want to plant roses in the ground, then you should still take them out of the pot and transplant the rose seedlings into the soil. It's just that before planting, we need to make some adjustments based on the quality of the soil.Preparation before planting roses in the ground
1. Check the soilIf it's fertile vegetable garden soil, then no special soil improvement is needed, but if it's poor gravelly soil, or soil full of construction waste, then you need to improve the soil before planting.
Note: Poor, compacted soil that hasn't been cultivated for a long time should also be improved before planting. Low-lying ditches and muddy ground are not suitable for growing roses.Soil improvement methods:If it's land with construction waste, Lanyao suggests you first clear away most of the construction waste, then cover it with a 40-50cm thick layer of garden soil.
If it's poor land that hasn't been cultivated for a long time, Lanyao suggests you don't rush to plant roses. You can first turn over and level the ground, then spread a layer of about 2cm thick unfermented chicken manure on the surface, or scatter a layer of unfermented cake fertilizer powder. During fermentation, microorganisms in these organic fertilizers will make the soil soft and loose, and after fermentation these organic fertilizers can also increase the soil's fertility.2. Prepare the base fertilizer
After the land is improved, before planting the roses, Lanyao suggests you prepare some base fertilizer. Of course, if you don't have any on hand, you can skip the base fertilizer for now and apply top dressing later.3. Prepare the planting tools
After buying the seedlings you like, prepare a large shovel. At the spot where you need to plant, dig a large hole. The hole should be one size larger than the seedling's flower pot.4. Planting
After the hole is dug, put the seedling in with its pot to test the depth of the hole. If the depth is right, you can loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole. If you have base fertilizer, you can put some in, then cover it with a layer of plain soil; if you don't have base fertilizer, you can skip it. Take the seedling out of the pot, place it in the hole with its original seedling soil ball, add soil and firm it down, then water thoroughly once.5. Management after planting
If planting in spring, autumn or winter, it's basically done at this point and they can survive naturally, but if transplanting in summer, then you need to pay attention to watering the day before.
In summer, water evaporates quickly. The special soil that comes with rose seedlings doesn't hold water as well as soil does, so it often dries out faster. And since they've just been planted and new roots haven't grown yet, if water can't be replenished in time, the roses risk dying of drought. This point needs attention.6. Top dressing
About 15 days after planting in the ground, once new roots have grown, you can apply top dressing. If you didn't add base fertilizer, at this time you can shallowly bury fermented organic fertilizer in a ring around the root system, taking care not to let it directly touch the roots. If you have flower growing questions, find Lanyao.
