There are many types of succulent plants. For example, the common Crassulaceae, Aizoaceae, and Cactaceae can all be called succulents, but their cultivation methods differ. Sedums are not afraid of high temperatures, nor are they afraid of high humidity; what sedums fear is high temperature combined with high humidity.

Today I will focus on how our most common Crassulaceae succulents can safely make it through summer.

Note 1: Ventilation

Most flower lovers grow succulents on outdoor balconies. The ventilation conditions on a balcony generally meet the basic requirements for sedums to get through summer, so there is no need to worry too much. But for friends growing them indoors, ventilation is basically a luxury. In such an environment, please be sure to find a way to lower the indoor temperature and control watering, and try to keep the soil and surrounding humidity low.

Note 2: Terracotta pots

When growing succulents in summer, be sure to maintain air permeability in the potting soil. After watering in a terracotta pot, moisture can even slowly seep out through the pot wall, so there is no need to worry at all about root rot from too much water. Porcelain pots and plastic pots have very poor air permeability, so for beginners who cannot judge watering well, it is best to use them as little as possible in summer.

Note 3: Watering

Most succulents are in a dormant period in summer and stop growing, so no matter how much water you give them, they cannot absorb it; on the contrary, too much water easily causes root rot. Therefore, reduce watering, and even when watering, just a little is enough. Of course, some succulents are still in their growing period in summer and need water. But avoid watering during the high temperatures at noon; it should be done in the early morning and in the evening.

Note 4: Soil mix

There is no fixed soil recipe; the general requirement is air permeability. If using a terracotta pot, you can add more peat; if using a porcelain pot, you should add more granules. As a reference mixing ratio, peat : perlite : granules (akadama, kanuma, hyuga, etc.) = 2:1:1, and at the same time add a small amount of plant ash and bone meal as a base fertilizer.

Note 5: Shade

Succulents like sunlight, but that does not mean they can withstand direct exposure at temperatures in the 30s Celsius. In this season, let succulents receive only the morning and evening sunlight; from 10:00 to 17:00, it is best to keep succulents in a place with plenty of scattered light.
