Honeysuckle is highly adaptable and prefers a sunny, moist, and fertile environment. Some people find that when growing and caring for honeysuckle, it grows slowly, blooms little, and some even fail to bloom at all. What is going on?

Today Hua'er will share what a ten-year veteran grower says: remember these 2 steps in honeysuckle care, and it will grow nonstop and be covered in blooms!

1. Pruning

Pruning honeysuckle is very important, and it should be done in 3 stages:

Stage 1: Train the main stem. Right after planting, if you want the main stem to become thick and strong, you should prune away some side buds so that nutrients are concentrated in the main stem. Once the main stem becomes thick and strong, the root system will also become thick, strong, and healthy.

Stage 2: Cut off the top of the main stem. When the main stem reaches 40cm-60cm, you should cut off its top to promote the sprouting and growth of side buds, making the honeysuckle plant fuller.

Stage 3: In the first year it basically just grows, with relatively few flowers, or no flowers at all. In the second year, in early spring, keep the thicker, stronger branches, remove the smaller ones, then cut off the tops of the side buds and pinch off the tender shoots, and it will bloom more and more vividly.

2. Fertilizing

Honeysuckle likes fertilizer. During the growing season and flowering period, give it enough nutrients. You can dig some small holes around it and bury some organic fertilizer, such as animal manure, bone meal, eggshell powder, etc., then fill the holes with a 1:1 mix of leaf mold and sandy soil, covering it with another layer of soil to form a thick layer. Do this once every two months to help it grow and bloom better.

During the flowering period, you can spray a 01% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves, which can make it form more buds and produce more flowers, making the blooms more vivid.

That is all for honeysuckle care. If you have anything else to add, feel free to share it with everyone in the comments section below. To learn more about flower growing, you can follow Huajianke!
