Those who often read Lanyao's articles have probably seen Lanyao's articles about fertilizing roses. Roses are one of the flowers that love fertilizer the most, because they bloom heavily and have a long flowering period.
Just the day before yesterday, a reader of Lanyao asked this question:
Can roses be fertilized during the flowering period?
It never rains but it pours - in the reader group, a flower lover asked a similar question:
The rose buds have colored up - can they still be fertilized?
Maybe you have the same doubt. Today Lanyao will briefly talk about how to fertilize roses during the budding stage, before flowering, during flowering and after flowering.
Fertilizing methods for roses at different stages:
Roses at different stages have different needs for fertilizer and water, so we should fertilize them differently. Below, Lanyao divides roses into 3 stages for analysis.
1. Bud stage (before flowering)The bud stage should start one week before the rose buds appear, but many flower lovers cannot accurately grasp the time when roses set buds, so Lanyao counts from the appearance of the buds all the way to when the buds color up. This time period is called the bud stage.
When roses are forming buds, they need to consume a large amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, so when fertilizing, you should mainly apply fertilizer with a higher content of phosphorus and potassium. For example, monopotassium phosphate, Huaduoduo No. 2, etc.
Note:
Many flower lovers use the foliar feeding method. Lanyao reminds you here that after rose buds have colored up, it is best not to use foliar feeding, because once the concentration is too high, it will directly cause burns on the rose buds.
2. Flowering stage (during flowering)Should roses be fertilized during the flowering stage? This seems to be a question many people want to ask.
One saying is: fertilizing during the flowering stage easily causes flowers to age prematurely and fade early.
Therefore many people stop fertilizing during the flowering period. But Lanyao's view on this is somewhat different.
Whether fertilizing during the flowering period causes flowers to age prematurely - let's not argue about that for now, but there are2 facts we should recognize clearly:
1. When flowers open, they need to consume a large amount of nutrients. 2. The formation of flower buds needs to consume a large amount of nutrients.
Roses are often multi-headed, with multiple buds on one branch. If buds are not thinned, generally the largest bud opens first, and then the smaller buds open.
During the flowering period, the flowers that open first consume a large amount of nutrients. If timely topdressing is not carried out to replenish them, then the small buds still forming will very likely die young due to insufficient nutrition.
I believe among our flower lovers, some have encountered the situation where roses bloom on one side while small buds turn yellow and fall off. This is mostly due to a lack of fertilizer.
What fertilizer to apply during the flowering period?During the flowering period, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should likewise be the main focus. Remember not to apply too much nitrogen fertilizer, otherwise the buds may abort due to excessive nitrogen. Also note that when topdressing, foliar feeding should be avoided; the root-drenching method can be used for topdressing.
3. Budding stage (after flowering)What Lanyao calls the budding stage refers to the period after roses are pruned after flowering, when new buds have not yet sprouted or have just sprouted, up to the appearance of flower buds.
At this stage, roses are mainly growing branches, with a relatively high demand for nitrogen fertilizer. At this time we can use fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content, or use a compound water-soluble fertilizer with a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio of 1:1:1 for topdressing.
