A Visit to Yingjiao Penjing Garden: Strolling Through the Garden and Admiring the Art of Penjing
Yingjiao Penjing Garden is located in Haiwan Forest Park in Fengxian District, Shanghai, and is a garden within a garden. The penjing garden covers more than 80 mu, making it one of the largest penjing gardens in China today. The garden contains more than a thousand fine penjing pieces invested by Mr. Sheng Yingjiao, and professional penjing technicians have been assigned to handle the daily management and penjing care in the garden. Mr. Sheng Yingjiao is vice president of the Penjing Branch of the China Flower Association and vice president of the China Penjing Artists Association.

This five-needle pine is native to Japan and has been in a pot for over a hundred years. In the 1930s it was passed from Japan to Shanghai Botanical Garden (formerly Longhua Nursery), where it was cultivated and shaped over several decades by senior Japanese horticultural technicians then in China. In the 1960s-70s, it was carefully restored and maintained by our first generation penjing art master, that is, the founder of the Shanghai-style penjing, the senior Yin Zimin, and was kept as a fine penjing collection of the botanical garden. On September 9, 1976, the great leader Chairman Mao passed away in Beijing. In order to mourn the Chairman and pay respects to his remains, the central authorities called for the best penjing from across the country to be assembled for the display and vigil in Chairman Mao's mourning hall. Leaders of various provinces and cities led experts to various botanical gardens to select penjing and send them to Beijing. This five-needle pine, representing Shanghai, took part in the mourning hall display for Chairman Mao's vigil and received high praise and approval from Beijing. In 1985 it was purchased at great expense by Yingjiao Penjing Garden (Shanghai Wangsheng Horticulture Co., Ltd.). After more than 20 years of careful maintenance, it has grown lush with branches and leaves, and can serve as a support for everyone to admire and remember the spirit of the great man. This five-needle pine penjing is the treasure of Yingjiao Penjing Garden.
