We often see some distinctive pairings at bonsai exhibitions. For example, a good bonsai work is usually accompanied by some green grass-like potted plants. These grasses have beautiful shapes like sprites, and foreigners call them Kusamono.

These wild, rustic little potted plants can be planted together or displayed alone as a scene. They can even be creatively planted in pots, on wooden blocks, in rocks, or in tile crevices to set off a large bonsai tree, making a distinctive and interesting beautiful scene.

The plants used for Kusamono can be moss, various grasses, flowers of various colors and sizes, fine bamboo, and bulbs. The style of the combination depends on our personal preferences and pairings.

To highlight the display effect of the bonsai, if the main bonsai on display has flowers, we can choose a Kusamono without flowers; if the main bonsai is a tree without flowers, then we can choose some Kusamono with small flowers for decoration, which looks warmer and more inviting.

But make sure the pot matches the type of plant. Choosing a suitable pot is very challenging. Of course, the pairing also depends on the size of the main bonsai. It cannot be too large or too small; looking harmonious is the most important thing.
