A Detailed Guide to Hydroponics and Care for Primroses

How to grow and care for primroseshydroponically?
Primrose, also known as yingcao or nianjinghua. It belongs to the family Primulaceae, genus Primula (or Primula). The primrose (pictured) is a perennial herbaceous plant with a persistent rootstock, often grown as an annual or biennial. The plant is low-growing, with the tallest reaching less than 50cm, and the garden hybrids popular in recent years tend to be even more dwarfed. The stem is extremely short. The leaves are basal and form clumps, elliptical or ovate, slightly wrinkled on the surface, with shallow notches along the margins. The flower head is an umbel, emerging from the base of the leaf clump. The corolla is funnel-shaped or salverform, with lobes. The flower colors are many, including red, yellow, purple, white, blue and bicolor. The flowering period is winter and spring.
1. Hydroponic method
(1) Select a robust small soil-grown plant, remove the mud and sand and dead roots by the root-washing method, disinfect with a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution, then plant it in a small-mouthed hydroponic container, and add clean water up to 2/3 of the root system.
(2) At the beginning of hydroponics, change the clean water once every 5 days, and water roots can grow out in about 10 days. When the plant shows strong growth vigor, add nutrient solution and place it in a spot with sufficient light for care, replacing the nutrient solution once a week. In summer, place it in a cool, ventilated place to prevent direct scorching sunlight. In winter, the room temperature should not be too high; 10-12°C is best, as this not only favors flowering but also makes the flower colors more vivid and the flowering period longer. After the flowers fade, promptly cut off the flower stalks and spent flowers, and remove dead leaves.
2. Care guide
(1) Temperature and light The temperature suitable for primrose growth is 10-20°C, and the safe overwintering temperature is above 5°C. Primroses like sufficient sunlight and grow well in a semi-shaded environment. At midday in summer, shading is needed; avoid direct strong sunlight and place the plant in a cool, ventilated spot.
(2) Fertilizing Add nutrient solution when changing the water for hydroponic primroses. When the plant shows strong growth vigor, the amount of nutrient solution can be increased.
(3) Water changing For hydroponic primroses in the early growth stage, change the water once every 2-3 days; after water roots grow out, changing the water once every 7-15 days is sufficient.
(4) Pest and disease control Hydroponic primroses are not prone to illness, but before hydroponics you must choose healthy plants.
