I believe many gardening enthusiasts who love growing flowers have also grown vegetables in pots, right? Especially on the balcony, potting some baby bok choy and small chili peppers is both attractive and harvestable. Among all potted vegetables, potted chives are relatively popular. Why? One, they are easy to grow; two, they grow fast! Next, Potted Plant Corner will tell you some tips for growing chives in pots, so you will not need to buy chives for a whole year.

There are two ways to grow chives in pots. One is to sow seeds. The other is to plant chive roots directly.

I strongly recommend that you do not start growing them from seed. Why? Because growing chives in pots this way is really too slow!

Chive seeds are as shown in the picture. Quite a few gardening friends have told me that they sowed seeds in flower pots on the balcony, and not only did the seeds germinate very slowly, but the chives that grew were also very thin.

See that? Chives grown from seed look like this, as thin as toothpicks. From germination to growing into thick, sturdy chives takes at least fifty to sixty days, but those grown from chive roots have already been harvested for several crops of chives.

The reason I recommend growing chives in pots from chive roots is very simple!Less worry! They grow well, the chive leaves are both wide and long, and you can cut a crop in twenty days.

As shown in the picture above, these are chive roots. Growing them in flower pots on the balcony with chive roots gives a 100% survival rate. Even gardening friends who have killed a cactus can keep chives alive.

Next, let me talk about the tips for growing chives in pots!

First, when planting chive roots, it is best to use three to five plants per clump, and each clump should keep a certain spacing. After planting them in the flower pot, cover with 3~5 cm of soil, and the depth should be such that the tillering nodes are not buried.

To grow potted chives, soil is naturally very important. It is best to mix your own nutrient soil. Generally, the ratio for the growing medium is 3 parts decomposed tree leaves, 2 parts decomposed livestock and poultry manure, and 5 parts high-quality farmland soil, or use 5 parts decomposed farmyard manure, 3 parts garden soil, and 2 parts sandy soil to make the potting soil. After all, only sufficient fertility can sustain the needs of chives' continuous growth.

Next comes daily management, such as watering. I suggest gardening friends stick to the principle of "water frequently and irrigate lightly." Under normal circumstances, water once every 3-5 days according to the dryness and moisture of the flower pot. Keeping the potting soil moist can help chives grow quickly.

In addition, remember to fertilize as well. Chives need relatively more fertilizer. When they grow to about 15 cm, remember to apply some organic fertilizer. On the balcony, you can use some plant ash or decomposed soybean cake. If you are growing them in the ground back in your hometown, then there is no need to worry, just use chicken and duck manure directly.

Finally, let me talk about harvesting.

Under normal conditions, when the temperature is suitable, chives can be cut once every half month. When cutting, be careful to do it in the morning or evening. Use scissors to cut along the potting soil, and do not worry that cutting them short will affect the next crop. After cutting, remember to loosen the soil. When loosening the soil, if you find the soil is dry, then water it a little. Then after a day or two, start applying a little fertilizer, and after that, with normal care, you can wait for the next crop.

Have you mastered the tips for growing chives in pots on the balcony? I wish gardening friends an endless supply of chives, crop after crop~
