Small Farmers, Big Food Lecture Series (Four)
From Farm to Market - The Diverse Ecosystem of Agricultural Production and Marketing
Event Introduction:
Taiwan's agriculture is structured around smallholder producers, with farmers cultivating small quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables on less than one jia of land. How to gather fresh produce from fields across Taiwan and deliver it to markets, and determine prices based on quality and supply and demand, so that all kinds of consumers, from small households that cook at home to food service businesses that eat out, can obtain sufficient ingredients at reasonable prices, while also ensuring that hardworking farmers receive the compensation they deserve, and minimizing waste of agricultural produce as much as possible - this has always been a tremendous challenge. And every year, because weather affects yields, vegetable prices surge and plunge dramatically, creating the phenomenon known as "vegetable dirt and vegetable gold." Society often blames vegetable prices on deliberate human manipulation, but what is the real scene of agricultural production and marketing actually like? How does the structure of agricultural production and marketing affect farming behavior at the production end? Can prices really be manipulated? These questions will be addressed by the speakers of this forum - Hsu Po-jen, Deputy Manager of the Planning Department at Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation, and Wu Ting-yen, Director of the Audit Office at Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation and a veteran auctioneer - who will reveal Taiwan's rich and diverse ecosystem of agricultural production and marketing.
