Rose cultivation series articles: No. 79

The temperature these past few days has been so high that it is a bit unbearable, and I wish I could crawl into an air-conditioned room and never come out. I wonder if my fellow gardening friends feel the same way as Lanyao?

This year's summer seems to have arrived especially early. It is only May and it already feels like midsummer. We humans are so hot that we do not want to leave our air-conditioned rooms, yet look at our roses, still outdoors all day enduring the scorching sun. The hardship of those days is easy to imagine.

Roses begin to grow slowly above 30°C and enter a semi-dormant period. If they are not managed well during the high-temperature summer season and end up with heatstroke, then our autumn blooms will be ruined.

So how should roses be protected from the heat and cooled down in summer? Lanyao has a few points to note for you.

Small methods for cooling and heat protection for roses:

1. Provide appropriate shade

On hot, sunny summer days, you can use shade netting to shade your roses; generally a 4-pin shade net is sufficient. When setting up the shade net, be careful to keep a certain distance from the rose plants so as not to affect ventilation.

2. Use a double pot for insulation

Gardening friends generally use plastic flower pots to grow roses. After exposure to the sun, the temperature of the potting soil rises very easily, which affects the health of the roses. Lanyao suggests that in summer you put your rose in a larger flower pot, and fill the gap between the pots with newspaper to block the sun's heat and achieve a cooling effect.

3. Use insulation boards for heat insulation

If you do not have a large flower pot, you can also use insulation boards to enclose the flower pot, blocking the sun's scorching exposure to the pot and achieving a cooling effect.

4. Group potted plants together

Arrange multiple potted plants together in groups, so the pots can shade one another and achieve a cooling effect.

5. Sun umbrella

Of course, if you find pulling shade netting and double-potting too troublesome, you can also choose to hold a sun umbrella over your roses at noon, which feels very nice for the roses too.

6. Strengthen ventilation

If it is an indoor balcony, just opening the windows for ventilation is not enough. It is best to prepare a small fan for your roses, but do not blow it directly at the rose pots; aim it toward the side of the pots, with the main purpose of increasing air circulation. With good ventilation, the roses will not feel so stuffy and hot.

That is all from Lanyao on the small methods for protecting roses from the summer heat. If you have better ways to cool down and prevent heatstroke, feel free to leave a comment below and share them so more gardening friends can know.
