Many friends say gardenias are very difficult to grow. Actually, as long as we understand the habits of gardenias, even in the north, we can still grow them into trees

So what should we pay attention to in our daily care?

1. The soil must be loose and breathable to grow the roots well

First, the soil must be loose and breathable so the roots can grow well. For example, the gardenia we just bought usually comes in relatively hard yellow clay soil, and this soil must be replaced. It is best to wait until after flowering to repot. Be sure to use loose, breathable soil for planting. You can mix leaf mold, large-particle river sand and garden soil, or you can mix peat moss, perlite and vermiculite, then add one part pine needles to ensure the soil is slightly acidic.

In suitable soil, gardenia roots will grow well, reach deep, and spread out, and the plant will be robust

2. Do not let it lack water

Gardenias love water, so watering must be sufficient. When you see the surface of the potting soil is dry, water it thoroughly right away. Do not let the gardenia lack water, as it easily wilts and drops flower buds

3. Do not give too much light

Giving the gardenia three or four hours of light a day is enough. Do not expose it to strong light. Place it in a well-ventilated spot. Long-term poor ventilation easily breeds bacteria and causes black leaf tips, rotten leaves and withering. This is leaf blight.

4. Fertilize with light fertilizer and apply it frequently

Gardenias also grow relatively fast. Apply a multi-element fertilizer once or twice a month, with light fertilizer applied frequently, so the roots always feel there is fertilizer, but it must not be too concentrated. This kind of fertilizing is what benefits gardenia growth.

5. Apply ferrous sulfate once a month,

Because gardenias like acidic soil, ferrous sulfate must be supplemented regularly. Do not use too much; apply it at a ratio of 1:1000 or more. It can be sprayed or used as a root drench, once every one to two months, and it can prevent iron-deficiency yellow leaves.

If these conditions are met, even if you are in the north, you can grow a gardenia into a tree. This is a gardenia tree grown at home in my hometown. It is over ten years old, three meters tall, and blooms thousands of flowers every year. The whole yard is filled with the fragrance of gardenias, and it feels especially satisfying.
