How to Grow Gardenia? Detailed Guide to Care Methods and Precautions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Growing gardenia requires acidic soil, a growing environment of 20-28°C, and good control of watering amount; the lower the temperature, the less water should be given. During the growing period, apply organic liquid fertilizer once every 10 days. Propagation can be done by cuttings and layering. In addition, common pests and diseases should be prevented.

I. Growing Environment

1. Soil: Gardenia is suited to growing in acidic soil, because this is very beneficial to its growth.

2. Watering: It is best to wait until the surface of the potting soil becomes dry before watering, so as to avoid root rot caused by excessive water accumulation. In winter, it is best to control the amount of watering; the lower the temperature, the less water should be given. In spring and autumn, water once every 2-3 days; in summer, water once in the morning and once in the evening each day; in winter, watering once a week is sufficient.

3. Fertilizing: When repotting, apply organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer. During the growing period, apply organic liquid fertilizer once every 10 days. After buds appear, apply phosphorus fertilizer 2-3 times.

4. Temperature: The temperature suitable for its growth is 20-28°C. Winter temperatures are very low, so it is best to place it in a spot with plenty of sunlight and a suitable temperature.

II. Propagation Methods

1. Cutting propagation: Choose mature young branches, cut them into 10-15cm lengths, and insert them into prepared soil. They will take root in 1 month, and can be transplanted in about 2 months.

2. Layering propagation: Use 1-2 year old mature branches, about 25-30cm long, and place them about 3 cm into the soil. They will take root in one month.

III. Common Pests and Diseases

1. Leaf spot disease: When the disease occurs, lesions appear on the plant. After the disease occurs, remove the diseased leaves as soon as possible to prevent an increase in infection sources. Usually strengthen ventilation and isolate affected plants to avoid infecting other plants. When the disease occurs, spray with Bordeaux mixture, about once a week.

2. Red spider mite: It causes leaves to turn yellow. To prevent and control it, manage humidity well, wash with water promptly once discovered, and it can also be killed by spraying with water in which cigarette butts have been soaked.
