How to Grow Bougainvillea? Growing Methods and Precautions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
For growing bougainvillea, it is best to choose loose soil with good drainage. Water it twice a day in summer, and reduce watering after the flowers fade. During the flowering period, apply phosphorus fertilizer appropriately and give it plenty of sunlight. Propagation can be done by cuttings and air layering, and common pests and diseases should also be prevented and controlled.

I. Growing Environment

1. Soil: Bougainvillea is not strict about soil requirements; it is best to choose loose soil with good drainage.

2. Watering: Water twice a day in summer. After the flowers fade, reduce watering; too much water will cause leaf drop or root rot, and watering should also be controlled in winter. In summer, increase the amount of watering; if water is lacking, leaf drop will occur and normal growth or flowering will be affected.

3. Fertilizing: After the weather turns warm, apply nitrogen fertilizer once every 10-15 days. During the growing period, apply cake fertilizer water once a week. During the flowering period, apply phosphorus fertilizer appropriately. When the temperature is low in winter, stop fertilizing.

4. Light: Bougainvillea likes sunlight. If there is insufficient light, its growth will weaken and flowering will be affected. In winter, it is best to place it in a spot with plenty of light and give it more than 8 hours of light a day, otherwise leaf drop is very likely to occur.

II. Propagation Methods

1. Cutting propagation: Cut off healthy branches that grew in the current year and insert them into the growing medium, leaving the leaf-bearing nodes exposed. After watering, cover them with plastic film and place them in a spot that receives diffused light.

2. Air layering propagation: On the branch to be layered, cut the bark at a position two cun above the fork of the parent plant. Wrap it with moist soil and tie it tightly with a plastic bag. Roots will grow in one month.

III. Common Pests and Diseases

Common pests and diseases include aphids, twig blight, and so on. After discovering them, promptly spray with pesticides such as dimethoate or thiophanate-methyl. In normal times, loosen the soil and remove weeds appropriately, strengthen ventilation, and clean up diseased leaves and branches thoroughly, so as to reduce the spread of disease sources.
