How to grow Phalaenopsis orchids? Detailed guide to care methods and precautions
1. Growing environment
(1) Temperature: Ideally 16 to 30 degrees. In winter, do not let it go below 13 degrees; in summer, do not let it go above 32 degrees.
(2) Humidity: This refers to air humidity, ideally 60% to 80%.
(3) Watering: The growth period is in spring and summer, so you can water more. In summer, water twice a day, at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Water less during the dormant period, and you may skip watering in winter.
(4) Light: Normally it can be placed in a semi-shaded spot, and provide diffused light before and after the flowering period.
(5) Fertilizing: It needs a lot during the growth period, so apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every 7 to 10 days. Use phosphorus fertilizer during the flowering period, once every 2 to 3 weeks.
2. Pruning
What is mainly discussed here is pruning after the flowering period. The plant usually blooms around the Spring Festival, and the flowers fade after about 2 to 3 months. At this time, the faded flowers need to be cut off promptly to reduce nutrient consumption. If you cut from 4 to 5 nodes at the base of the flower stem, it will bloom again, but this is not good for the next year's blooming. Therefore, the correct approach is to cut the flower stem off from the bottom.
3. Repotting
The plant grows very fast and needs regular repotting. If the growing medium ages or its air permeability worsens, it should also be replaced promptly. Generally, you can repot around May, before new leaves grow out. Replace the old soil that lacks nutrients or has poor air permeability, then move it to a slightly larger pot suited to the plant's size. This provides it with a roomy growing environment.
